England Women show fighting quality

In Wednesday’s Quarter Final against Spain Women at Brighton’s Amex Stadium, the Lionesses were second-best for the first hour of the match.

Spain were knocking the ball around neatly, doubling up on England’s full-backs and were bossing proceedings.

England were struggling to get into the game, looking flat and disjointed. Nothing was being created in the Spain penalty box.

A nice turn and finish in the box by Ester Gonzalez in the 54th minute gave Spain Women a deserved lead.

That left the Lionesses in a position of needing to dig deep and do what they can to fight their way back. They did.

Wiegman’s influence

After falling behind, head coach Sarina Wiegman didn’t hesitate to change things up. Reinforcements were sent on almost immediately.

The experienced Dutchwoman won the last Women’s European Championships with her home nation.

Since she took over England, the only team to prevent England from winning a match was Spain, earlier this year in a mini-tournament.

Wiegman tweaked what needed to be tweaked with the subs.

It was one of those second-half subs that would change the flow of the game.

Ella Toone popped up in the 84th minute to slot home after some great aerial work by Lauren Hemp.

That was the boost that the Lionesses needed and then they had all the momentum at the finish, as Spain started to flag.

But the match still went to extra time.

The decisive moment of the match was a stunning strike from Georgia Stanway, who didn’t have her greatest match in an England shirt, which broke the tie.

She picked the ball up in the Spain half and just ran directly at their defence before unleashing an unstoppable drive from outside of the box in the 96th minute.

Favourites bow out

Spain Women were the pre-tournament favourites in Women’s Euro 2022 betting, so that was a big result for England.

It also proved that they can not only win easily as they did in the group stage, but they can dig deep and fight when they need to.

Having such a talented, deep squad is a massive help to their European Championships bid.

So England are the new firm favourites in the Women’s Euro 2022 odds having eliminated the front-runners.

What next for England Women?

The Lionesses will now have the luxury of a break as they will play their semi-final on July 26th.

That will be welcome after grinding through extra time against Spain.

England’s semi-final will be against either Sweden Women or Belgium Women, with the Swedes the favourites to win the tie.

There is a quote of 1/3 odds-on for Sweden Women, with Belgium out at 9/1 for the match win* (odds recorded at 03:21 GMT on July 21st, 2022 at Bet365).
