England Women News and Form

After their bronze four years ago in Canada, England’s Lionesses are one of the front runners to win this year’s edition of the tournament. That success four years ago was out of the blue, but they played with such tremendous team spirit and belief. Four years ago, they played an open game, were fearless and grew in statue. However, now they have Phil Neville in charge, some of that positive shine has been taken off a little bit. They are much flatter and more pragmatic in contrast.

But even with that in mind, they are still one of the favourites to deliver the goods at France 2019. There is the pressure of expectation now and will be fully expected to collect a win in this game. But when they stack up against the best teams in the world, England look short of star quality up front. It is Nikita Parris (who is heading off to Lyon next summer), who is going to be leading the charge up front for the Lioness. England have a strong core of players like Steph Houghton, Frank Kirby and Karen Carney but you wonder if there is real creativity there.

Successes for England to build on

Earlier this year England won the SheBelievesCup. After beating Brazil and drawing with world champions USA, England then beat a young Japan side in the final 3-0. That was their first ever title at the competition. So that should have boosted confidence, and they were semi finalists at Euro 2017 too.

England are W3 D1 L2 in their last six games, losing their final warm-up match 1-0 against New Zealand. They have failed to score in two for their last four games played. Will England find themselves rattled by their neighbours from the north?

Key-Facts – England Women v Scotland Women

  • England have won just three of their last six games
  • The Lionesses have one clean sheet in their last four
  • Undefeated in their last five games now are Scotland, winning four

Scotland Women News and Form

The Scots faced England at Euro 2017 and they suffered a 6-0 defeat. Part of their problem that day was being hampered because of key injuries. That’s not the case this time around though. So they are in pretty good shape at the moment to try and gain some revenge for that miserable day a couple of summers ago. Scotland have taken a win in four of their last five games, going undefeated in that sequence. They will be coming up against someone stronger opposition here naturally though.

This hasn’t been a particularly kind group draw for Scotland, because not only do they have to compete with England but also Japan too, who were runners up four years ago in Canada. Scotland do have some world class players in their ranks, with midfielder Kim Little among them. Erin Cuthbert and Lisa Evans are also touches of real quality that the Scots have in their squad this time. Head Coach Shelley Kerr is onto something really good with them at the moment. The Scots will believe that they can get something out of this contest.

England Women v Scotland Women Predictions

England to win: Scotland look good at the moment and should be confident of frustrating England. They certainly look a bit of value to be sticking in there level at the half time break. The Lionesses don’t look a fluent side under Neville, but should still have the depth in their ranks to produce the win. England to win & both teams to score.
