The big news rocking the world of football this week has been the announcement that England’s Big Six have agreed to join the breakaway European Super League.

This has been a bit of a bombshell, but not a total surprise. However, it has left a lot of people, including supporters, up in arms about it.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal, England’s Bix Six have all agreed to take part in the European Super League.

Joining them in the founding 12 clubs are Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter.

Fans and governing bodies up in arms

UEFA boss Aleksander Ceferin seems to be steaming about it.

In a press conference on Monday, he laid out clearly what he though. He seems determined to ban players who play in the European Super League from other major tournaments.

Ceferin also wants the 12 clubs who are involved at the moment (more potentially to follow) to be banned from European competition as well.

It will be all eyes on FIFA boss Gianni Infantino next. It’s going to be fascinating to see what kind of stance that they are prepared to take against the ESL.

Sanctions could rock the English game

So to potential issues facing the Big Six. With one of the potential major sanctions for the English clubs involved being booted out of the Premier League, that’s raised some interesting betting markets.

There is an interesting other side of this. If the six English teams involved in the ESL breakaway were banned from the Premier League, that would leave a very interesting title race in the English top flight.

What’s happening next?

A lot of legal battles are probably going to be flying around to sort this out. Clubs will launch bids to try and stay in the Premier League as well.

That would be against UEFA’s clear stance of wanting the clubs banned from other domestic action if they play in the ESL.

But there is a quote of 5/6 at Paddy Power that the European Super League won’t even get off the ground anytime soon.

The odds-on quote being available on Premier League clubs not playing an ESL game before 2025* (odds recorded at 04:09 GMT on April 20th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

It’s all a bit uncertain at the moment.

But there already is European Super League betting options out there.

Just not on the competition, but on the ugly side of what is likely to be a long legal wrangle.
