Japan Women v England Women Predictions & Betting Odds – 19th June 2019

Lionesses to be held to a draw?

Japan Women v England Women Betting Tips – Women’s World Cup, 19th June 8.00pm

Both Japan and England will be in the next round of the competition. The only thing that is left to be settled is who will finish top. England hold a two-point advantage over Japan and so they only need a draw out of this game. Japan, therefore, have to win. With a draw suiting both of them though, it will probably be a matter of both sides making changes ahead of the knockout. Read our predictions for Japan Women v England Women.

Japan Women News and Form

Japan are moving through to the next round of the World Cup. Japan could end up in either of the top three spots in the group. So the worst case scenario would see them losing this and having Argentina overtake them with a win. That would leave Japan as one of the best third-placed teams. Japan started their campaign with a 0-0 draw against the dogged Argentina. Japan bossed possession but didn’t really create enough clear cut chances. They were much better against Scotland, and their movement was wonderful in their 2-1 success.

Japan are a good side technically, tactically aware and confident. While their form during 2019 doesn’t make for particularly wonderful reading, it is because they were using a lot of their younger players, giving them playing time. Still, they got to the final of the SheBelievesCup where they lost to England in March. Their win over Scotland snapped a five-match winless streak of form (D3 L2). Their record in World Cup matches is good. They are W7 D1 L1 in their last nine games at World Cup Finals. The one loss in that sequence was their 5-2 reverse against the USA in the 2015 World Cup Final.

Key-Facts – Japan Women v England Women

  • Japan have won 7 of their last 9 World Cup games
  • The Lionesses have won four of their last five games

England Women News and Form

The Lionesses will look at this game and still be thinking back to that 2015 World Cup semi-final. The one that they lost when Laura Bassett, unfortunately, put through her own net in the 92nd minute of the game to give Japan a 2-1 win. England did beat a young Japanese side 3-0 at the SheBelievesCup in March. Phil Neville’s team started this World Cup campaign with 2-1 success over Scotland. It was then a 1-0 win over Argentina that they had to dig out. The South Americans, as they had done against Japan, did a great job of frustrating their higher-ranked opponents.

The Lionesses have won four of their last five games played now (L1). To find fault with them, they have been a bit one dimensional and haven’t looked creative at all in the final third of the pitch. Jodi Taylor came to their rescue against Argentina but they should get Toni Duggan back for this. England’s key striker Nikita Parris, who got their opener against Scotland through a spot kick, missed from the penalty spot against Argentina. The Lionesses are now W7 L1 in their last eight World Cup fixtures. The only loss that sequence of fixtures came against Japan. Each of England’s last eight Women’s World Cup fixtures have either produced a 2-1 or a 1-0 result.

Japan Women v England Women Predictions

Draw: Neither of these looks to be particularly threatening in the final third of the pitch. Given that both would be happy with a point out of this, then it may not be the greatest of spectacles. They may both look to conserve star power ahead of the knockout stages. Draw.
