It was three wins from three for El Tri in the group stage. They scored a total of 13 goals in those fixtures as well, conceding three against them. Mexico took their successes over Cuba, Canada and Martinique. The Americans also won all three of their group stage games. They were flying in front of goal as well, netting eleven unanswered in their three games against Guyana, Trinidad and Panama. They locked in the group win with a 1-0 success over Panama in their final group stage game. The defence of the USA kept up its standards in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Curacao. That left them going head to head with Jamaica in the semis a rematch of the last Gold Cup Final.

The USA produced a 3-1 victory in the game and new Chelsea player Christan Pulisic got himself a brace in the game. That leaves him as the USA’s joint top scorer alongside Gyasia Zardes. Weston McKennie has scored in both knockout stage games for the USA. Just prior to the start of the tournament the Americans were winless in three games (D1 L2), but they were always expected to turn up and perform.
