Will the Kiwis make it out of the group stage of a World Cup for the first time ever? That has to be their goal for this campaign. They should have a place as one of the best third-placed teams in their sights. This is a group where the Netherlands and Canada are expected to take the top two spots. So the Football Ferns need to try and take a point off of one of those, will beating Cameroon. New Zealand did give themselves a good lift in taking a 1-0 win over England as part of their warm-up matches at the start of the month.
In their last seven games, New Zealand have put a W4 D3 record on the board. The Kiwis did compete in the Cup of Nations which started at the end of February. They were soundly beaten by Australia, before beating Argentina well, but then they lost against South Korea. They don’t look as if they have a great deal to offer going forward really, so this is going to be a hard game for them to get a lot going in attack. Success can certainly bring its own pressure. That is where there Netherlands are at right now. Two summers ago they won the European Championships against the odds. But they were driven along by some brilliant performances from Lieke Martens and Vivivanne Miedema which helped carry them to success. Those are two world-class assets the Dutch have and that is where their dynamic edge comes from. Miedema could easily get in the mix to win the Golden Ball at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
But since hitting the heights of being crowned European Champions, they have had a few struggles. They only reached the World Cup by getting through a playoff tie against Switzerland. What set them back in their qualification campaign was a defeat in Norway and a home draw against Ireland. They competed in the Algarve Cup this year, picking up a D1 L2 record from that, losing to Spain and Poland before beating China on a penalty shootout. They have picked things up a bit since, winning three straight friendly fixtures ahead of the 2019 World Cup. There’s some great talent in there if they can put it all together.
