Northern Trust Golf Betting Odds, Tips & Preview 2021

A look at the main contenders for the Northern Trust FedExCup Playoff this week

The FedExCup Playoffs have arrived and this week full attention turns to the Northern Trust golf betting.

This is a superb field in attendance at Liberty National Golf Club. It’s really down to the business end of things for the PGA Tour season.

It’s survival that is in the mind of most as the 124 players taking part all have their eyes on the big prize of The FedExCup.

Our Northern Trust golf betting preview takes a look at the field and the main contender for a win this week.

When and where is the Northern Trust?

The Northern Trust tournament is hosted at Liberty National in New Jersey. This is the fourth time that the tournament has been hosted by the venue.

The course used to be a landfill but now it’s a picturesque top-level golf course with some cool views of New York City to boot.

As usual, it is a Thursday start on August 19th, concluding on Sunday, August 21st.

Tournament Info

This is the first of three tournaments in the FedExCup Play Offs. The top 125 players qualify for this stage of the season.

That’s all based on performances across the rest of the season.

Only the top 70 players left on the FedExCup rankings following the Northern Trust, move on to the BMW Championship.

That field will then be trimmed down to just 30 players who put it all on the line in the final event, the Tour Championship.

The Northern Trust field is down to 124 because Louis Oosthuizen (ranked 8th in FedExCup standings) has opted not to play.

Collin Morikawa

Northern Trust Golf Betting Favorite

Spain’s Jon Rahm is the current 9/1 favourite in Northern Trust Golf Betting* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

He decided to take a rest after going close with a T3 at The Open.

The clear best result that he produced this season was the title at the US Open, Rahm claiming his first major there.

Rahm is top of the Official World Golf Rankings with an average of 69.4 for the campaign.

It has been a special season for him and Rahm has taken a Top 10 finish in all but two of his last nine tournaments.

Rahm was tied for sixth in last year’s Northern Trust, before stepping forward to win the BMW Championship and taking fourth at the Tour Championship.

Our betting prediction:
Rory McIlroy Top 5 Finish
4/1

Collin Morikawa

Things are going to be tight for players trying to hit the fairways this week because of the nature of the hazards that are around.

Collin Morikawa is one of those players you tend to lean towards on tracks like this.

He has the accuracy of the tee and that should put the 18/1 shot fully in contention* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

He’s bang in form at the moment as well, picking up the title at The Open last month and then going close at the Olympics.

He returns after a T26 at the FedEx St Jude Invitational earlier this month.

Morikawa is one of the best at sticking in on the tight fairways and has some great momentum behind him.

Northern Trust Golf betting Odds Top 10 Finish

John Rahm 11/10
Jordan Spieth 7/4
Collin Morikawa 15/8
Dustin Johnson 21/10
Zander Schauffele 9/4
Rory McIlroy 17/10
Brooks Koepka 5/2
Just Thomas 11/4
Daniel Berger 11/4
Bryson Dechambeau 3/1
Patrick Cantlay 16/5
Viktor Hovland 16/5
Scottie Scheffler 16/5
Paul Casey 7/2
Hideki Matysama 7/2
Webb Simpson 16/5
Cameron Smith 4/1
Patrick Reed 4/1

Jordan Spieth

There has been a big resurgence of form by Jordan Speith this season and the former FedExCup champion is back in the hunt this year.

He is second overall in the current FedExCup standings and he looks to have targeted this end of season festival.

Spieth has only played The Open and the St Jude Invitational in the last two months.

So he should be nice and fresh and rates at threat in Northern Trust golf betting at 16/1* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

Spieth has played here at Liberty National before, taking a tie for sixth in the 2019 edition of the Northern Trust at the venue.

The American should be a big player this week.

Daniel Berger

There is a lot to like about the threat that Daniel Berger brings to the table for this week’s golf betting action.

He has been trending towards something big recently and he also has a little bit of course experience as well.

In his last four tournaments, he has carded a top ten finish in three of those.

So Berger, who is a quote of 28/1 to win outright this week, has his form going in the right direction* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

Berger represented the USA in the Presidents Cup here at Liberty National in 2017 and produced a very good performance for his country.

He claimed the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this season; recent results put him in the frame for a good solid week.

Brooks Koepka

Koepka is another, like Berger, who was in the 2017 Presidents Cup team that played here at Liberty National.

It was an inconsistent event from him, just as it was at the St Jude Invitational on his recent outing.

Koepka could have been backed as a favourite for the WGC St Jude but hit a terrible Sunday to finish at T54.

That does mean that he’s gone on the drift for Northern Trust golf betting odds this week.

He is a current quote of 20/1 to win outright* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

But he shouldn’t be dismissed.

There was that blip for Kopeka last week for sure, but that snapped a run of four top-six finishes in the five tournaments he played before that.

Koepka can be frustrating to follow at times, but there’s little doubt that if he puts things together he can firmly scrap his way into the mix.

Last 10 Northern Trust Winners

  • 2020 Dustin Johnson
  • 2019 Patrick Reed
  • 2018 Bryson Dechambeau
  • 2017 Dustin Johnson
  • 2016 Patrick Reed
  • 2015 Jason Day
  • 2014 Hunter Mahan
  • 2013 Adam Scott
  • 2012 Nick Watney
  • 2011 Dustin Johnson

Dustin Johnson

The ultimate horses for courses option. That is Dustin Jonson, the 2020 FedExCup winner. That included a win at the Northern Trust at TPC Boston.

At the 2017 President Cup, he was the pick of the American team at the tournament. He was back on it again at Liberty National for the 2019 Northern Trust.

Johnson was leading after two rounds of that tournament before he endured a tough weekend to fall to T24 at the close.

2021 perhaps hasn’t seen the best of Johnson, but with two top-ten finishes in three of his last four appearances, you wouldn’t put it past him to be in the mixer.

He is a three-time Northern Trust winner after all.

Dustin Johnson is an 18/1 pick in Northern Trust golf betting.* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

Other Contenders

Rory Mcllroy has his figures going in the right direction as well and screams some value at 4/1 in Top 5 Finish golf betting* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

The odd frustrating mistake has been plaguing him, no doubt. But by equal measures, McIlroy has looked more and more like himself this season.

Scottie Scheffler is still looking to break his maiden on the PGA Tour. But his form in the big tournaments this season is exemplary.

The tougher the action, the bigger the performance from Scheffler it seems. The Texan warrants some props at 13/2 for a Top 5* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).

The final selection that we are looking at this week for Northern Trust golf betting is Adam Scott.

He has three appearances on the Tour at Liberty National and has won at the track before. In the 2019 Northern Trust at the venue, Scott recorded a top-five finish.

A win at the Wyndham just evaded him recently, and he looks to be striking the ball well at the moment.

Scott is easily worth Top 10 finish consideration at 4/1* (odds recorded at 18:07 GMT on August 18th, 2021 at Paddy Power).
