Panama News and Form – Tough task in Kansas for the Canal Men?

Following on from their maiden FIFA World Cup campaign in Russia last year, Panama have had a very good Gold Cup tournament thus far. The Canal Men have taken six points from a possible six, seeing off both Trinidad and Guyana by two goals.

Panama kicked off their competition with a comfortable 2-0 win over the Soca Warriors in Saint Paul. Armando Cooper got them up and running with a goal in the 53rd minute, which was quickly followed by a Yoel Barcenas strike. The Panamanians were worthy winners in Minnesota.

Despite conceding two goals to Guyana in Cleveland, Ohio last time out, Julio Valdes’ side did more than enough to seal three points and a passage through to the knockouts. Efforts from Abdiel Arroyo, Erick Davis and Gabriel Torres as well as an own goal by Guyana’s Terence Vancooten gave the Red Tide a 4-2 win at the FirstEnergy Stadium.

This is Panama’s tenth Gold Cup appearance, and they have certainly had a solid tournament so far. Having finished runners-up in 2005 and 2013, could this be the Canal Men’s year?

USA News and Form – Nine points out of nine for the Stars and Stripes?

USA have been dominant so far, scoring ten and conceding none in their opening two games. The States began the defence of their crown with an easy 4-0 victory over Guyana at Allianz Field in Minnesota, with Tyler Boyd (2), Paul Arriola and Gyasi Zardes getting the goals.

Zardes and Aaron Long then helped themselves to two goals each in the 6-0 mauling of Trinidad & Tobago last time out. Arriola was on the scoresheet again, as was Chelsea’s new man Christian Pulisic. The Stars and Stripes were outstanding in Cleveland, racking up 26 shots on Trinidad’s goal.

USA have enjoyed success in this tournament in recent times, winning the Gold Cup on six occasions over the past 28 years. Two years back, the States beat Jamaica 2-1 in the final at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara to claim their sixth crown.

Gregg Berhalter’s team were among the favourites before a ball was kicked in the 2019 Gold Cup, and they have definitely lived up to that favourites tag up until now. Will the holders make it nine points from a possible nine on Thursday?

Panama v USA Predictions

USA win: Panama have had a fine time in America so far, but the holders should have too much quality for them to handle in this one. Check out the tempting odds of 7/2 for USA to win -2. Columbus Crew’s Gyasi Zardes has been superb for USMNT lately, scoring three times in two Gold Cup fixtures. Therefore, back the 27-year-old to open the scoring (4/1) at Children’s Mercy Park.
