South Africa News and Form

Out of the gates, South Africa had problems as they lost 1-0 against the Ivory Coast in their opening game. They then redressed the balance with a 1-0 win over Namibia. So they are behind the group leaders by three points and going into this game level on points with the Ivory Coast who are in second place. So South Africa will need some help from Namibia to try and push for a top-two finish. South Africa have to better Ivory Coast’s result against Namibia to progress in an automatic qualification spot.

However, it is likely that even if they were to end up in third place they will have amassed enough points to get through to the knockouts as one of the best third-placed teams. South Africa though haven’t had much of a winning touch as of late, taking just the two wins in their last eight (D5 L1). But with just one loss in that game, there is the factor of them having been a tough side to beat. They have only conceded one goal in their last three. They haven’t shown a lot of power in attacking, just once in their last eight games South Africa managed to score more than one goal in a game.

Morocco News and Form

So Morocco are holding the aces in this group with them having picked up six points from their opening two games. It’s not a done deal yet though. Both of their group wins have been 1-0 wins over Namibia and the Ivory Coast. They did struggle to get that win on the board in their opener against Namibia, Morocco getting the win when their opponents scored an own goal in the last minute. This is a group where none of the teams really have looked to have been in terrific form. But a point is all they need.

Morocco are W2 D1 L3 in their last six games. They went on a three-match streak without scoring a goal. Their record through their qualification process was W3 D2 L1 record, and that saw them top the group above the reigning AFCON holders Cameroon on goal difference only. So that was a tight squeeze from them there and this could end up being tight in the group stage here. To their credit, they took four clean sheets in their six qualifiers. They may well just approach this with conservative mindset to get the group win with a point.

South Africa v Morocco Predictions

Draw: The draw looks a plausible outcome here. Morocco are the better of the two sides in this one but they only have to settle for a point to hold off the challenge at the top of the group. So they aren’t going to risk a lot, not when defeat could cost them. South Africa just may not have enough to take them down.
