It was a 4-0 win that Uruguay took over Ecuador to start their Copa America campaign. It was then a strange 2-2 draw against Japan that they played out, twice fighting back from being a goal down. In the final round of matches, they had little work to do to secure top spot, but they did so with a 1-0 success over Chile. Edinson Cavani got that winning goal, his second of the tournament. Luis Suarez also has two for them. While it’s not the youngest front line Uruguay have, they have some quality there. They did have that blip against Japan defensively but otherwise, are a strong defensive side.
The success over Chile took Uruguay to a W5 D1 record in their six games played during this calendar year. In none of the five wins in that run of form did Uruguay concede a goal in. The Uruguayans have scored at least two goals in five of their last six games. They were champions of the Copa America in 2011. However, they failed to even get out of the group stage in the last edition in 2016. But they have gone better than that already and could have enough about them to challenge for the title.

Peru ended with a W1 D1 L1 record from the group stage of this edition of the Copa America. They opened with a 0-0 draw against Venezuela before beating the weak opposition of Bolivia 3-1. The group stage ended badly for them though as they suffered a 5-0 reverse against Brazil. Still, they had done enough to get through to the knockout stages as one of the two best third-placed teams. They are going to have a big struggle it would seem, to go deeper into the tournament.
In the quarterfinals of the 2016 Copa America, Peru lost out on penalties against Colombia. Their track record at the Copa America isn’t all that bad because they have been to at least the quarterfinals in each of the last eight editions of the competition and have finished third in two of the last three. But they are certainly not at the quality that they were when they had those strong finishes at the tournament. Peru are only W4 D2 L7 since the 2018 World Cup. Their win over the poor Bolivia side in the group stage of this tournament is their only success in four (D1 L2).
