England Second Favourites in Women’s Euro 2022 Betting

England Women are the 9/2 second-favourites in Women’s Euro 2022 betting odds, with only Spain Women ahead of them* (betting odds recorded at 00:15 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

The European Championship title is something that England have never managed to get their hands on before. But they look like a clear threat on home turf. The Lionesses have reached the semi-finals in each of their last three major international tournaments.

So it has been a story of near misses. But their chances of going all the way, do look reasonable in this month’s tournament.

Wiegman the difference?

England Women have the experience and brilliance of Sarina Wiegman at the helm. She’s a proven winner and could make all the difference at Euro 2022 for England Women.

Wiegman guided the Netherlands Women to their first-ever Women’s European Championship success in 2017. Two years later she took them to the Women’s World Cup Final. They lost that one to the always-impressive USA.

But still, it showed what Wiegman can do. She also got the best out of world-class players like Vivianne Miedema. England have plenty of star power in their ranks.

Wiegman was announced as the new England manager in the autumn of 2020. The Lionesses have remained undefeated under her charge, winning 12 of 14 matches.

Squad depth impressive for Lionesses

England Women are blessed with such a deep squad. It’s really an enviable one, and probably the strongest of all teams at the Women’s European Championships. It’s not all down to finding the right combinations.

One particular area of strength is attack. England’s record goalscorer Ellen White is still going strong. The Man City striker is the current 6/1 outright favourite in the Women’s Euro Top Goalscorer market* (betting odds recorded at 00:15 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

England Women also have Beth Mead who has had a phenomenal season for Arsenal. There are youngsters Ella Toone (11 goals in 15 international) and Lauren Hemp as part of their attacking options.

It really is a phenomenal set-up that England have. The midfield boasts captain Leah Williamson, with the likes of Keira Walsh and creative options in Georgia Stanway and Fran Kirby.

England haven’t taken former captain Steph Houghton. Wiegman was ruthless enough to leave her out because of a lack of playing time due to injury this season.

There’s still plenty of experience at the back however with the likes of Lucy Bronze, Rachel Day, Millie Bright, Alex Greenwood and Demi Stokes.

England Women’s Euro 2022 Group Stage Challenge

England Women face Norway Women, Austria Women and Northern Ireland Women in the group stage. On paper, it is a group that the hosts should win.

The bookmakers appear to agree as England Women are 4/11 odds-on favourites to win Group A* (betting odds recorded at 00:15 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

England open against Austria, a team that they struggled to break down in November last year. That was a 2023 World Cup qualifier, England taking a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light courtesy of Ellen White.

But Austria were wonderfully obstinate and diligent. They caused England a few problems when they did get forward too. Austria made their Women’s European Championships debut in 2017 and sprung a huge surprise by reaching the semi-finals.

Norway Women are not going to be a pushover either. They won the title in 1987 and have finished as runners-up four times since then. They’ve finished second in two for the last four editions and rate as a danger. They are boosted by the return to the international scene by Ada Hegerberg, one of the best players in the world.

Group A Winner Odds: England Women 4/11, Norway Women 5/1, Austria Women 14/1, Northern Ireland Women 50/1

What lies ahead in the knockout stage?

Assuming that England Women do win Group A, that would put them through to a Quarter Final match against the Group B runners-up.

There’s danger there for England Women because Group B is absolutely stacked.

Germany, Denmark and the current 3/1 outright favourites Spain are in there* (betting odds recorded at 00:15 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

Germany is the all-time most successful team at the Women’s European Championships, with eight titles. Denmark were runners-up to the Netherlands at the last edition, and as mentioned, Spain are favourite for this year’s tournament.

The best-case scenario there for England Women will be to avoid Spain at this stage of the contest. England had problems against them in a 0-0 draw during the 2022 Arnold Clark tournament. They did however, beat Germany 3-1 in that same tournament.

Assuming they make it to the semi-finals, England Women would probably be on a collision course against either reigning champions the Netherlands or strong contenders Sweden. It could then be Spain or France in the Final. Basically, there is not an easy route to the title.

Can the Lionesses do it?

The tournament is wide open and England Women know that a place in the Final would be at Wembley. That has to be a huge incentive.

The quality of the tournament looks a lot richer this go around and England Women are part of that.

The key factor for their chances is just how loaded with options their squad is.

It’s only going to take someone like Lauren Hemp, Beth Mead, Ellen White or even Rachel Daly to start strongly in front of goal. Then England Women’s chances are going to be boosted.

In Wiegman, they have a proven winner. She may just have to do it the hard way, five years on from her success with the Netherlands.
