Preview: With AC Milan and Lazio making the best possible starts to the 2021-22 domestic season in Italy, something will have to give at the San Siro Sunday when the pair, who are in confident form having notched 15 goals between them across the opening two rounds, renew their rivalry in Milan.

AC Milan – Ruthless Rossoneri seeking to extend unbeaten run?

For the second season running, AC Milan begin the new league term with successive victories. The Rossoneri won their opening four fixtures last time around, on their way to an incredible 15-game unbeaten start that will be difficult to replicate. But they’ve made the best possible start in their attempt to do so, scraping a slender 1-0 win away to Sampdoria before easing past Cagliari, winning 4-1 at San Siro.

It takes them to three straight Serie A wins having not lost any of the last seven in the competition (W6), stretching back into last season of course. They’ve averaged three goals per game across this unbeaten period, so are clearly not lacking for ideas in the attacking third of the pitch. Meanwhile, Cagliari’s consolation was the first Stefano Pioli’s men had conceded in more than nine hours of league action!

Key Stat: Although it is one goal conceded in the last seven Serie A matches for AC Milan, it is worth noting that at home they have only kept two clean sheets in the last nine.

Lazio – Goals already flowing under Sarri?

Last season’s disappointing conclusion to Serie A appears to be well and truly behind the Biancocelesti, beginning 2021-22 in scintillating fashion with a couple of high-scoring triumphs. Perhaps the change of manager has done the trick. Under former Chelsea and Juventus tactician Maurizio Sarri, Lazio already boast more wins (2) from their first two outings this season than their final five of the last (1).

Neither victory was entirely straightforward. At least not initially. Lazio fell behind inside four minutes to both Empoli and Spezia. However this only served to fire up Le Aquile who surged back to win both, impressively leading at half-time each time despite the early concessions. Such firepower will come in handy this weekend, as they are without an away clean sheet in five Serie A away games (W1 L4).

Key Stat: Their 3-1 win away to Empoli in round one of the new Serie A season ended a run of four straight away league games conceding two or more.

AC Milan Vs Lazio Betting Advice

Someone’s perfect start to the 2021-22 Serie A term is going to be ruined over the coming weekend. It seems unlikely both will remain unbeaten, however, as all of the past five league meetings between the sides has produced a winner one way or another. AC Milan snatched the win late on in last season’s corresponding fixture, a 3-2 classic, to earn them their fourth league win in five (L1) here at San Siro versus Lazio.

AC Milan Vs Lazio – Key Facts:

  • The home side prevailed in each Serie A clash between these sides last term. Over 2.5 Goals landed in each of the last four, while the team scoring first has won the last six.
  • Ciro Immobile scored a first-half hat-trick before the international break – only the second in his Serie A career – while Olivier Giroud netted a brace last time out for Milan.
  • AC Milan come into Sunday’s exciting clash unbeaten in seven in the league (W6); Lazio do so having scored nine across the first two rounds for the first time in their history.

Goals seem to way to go. Not only has the last four league meetings gone Over 2.5 Goals but the pair approach Sunday’s contest in confident form. Milan scoring five and Lazio nine as both collected six points from six. And while Milan have only conceded once in their last seven league games, it is two clean sheets in nine as hosts. Meanwhile Lazio are coming off five successive away games conceding at least once (2+ in four).
