Preview: The only thing certain as 2020 draws to a close is one of the Milan clubs will see it out top of Serie A. Three points for AC Milan on Wednesday, in their contest at the San Siro with Lazio, will ensure they are the team to catch when the action resumes in January.

AC Milan – Pioli’s side to keep on delivering without talisman?

The Rossoneri’s lead at the Serie A summit has been cut down to size by neighbours Inter. Antonio Conte’s men are now a point behind the long-time leaders after making it six wins from their last six league games on Sunday. That same day, however, AC Milan (W9 D4) ended their longest run of the campaign without a win (2), following up back-to-back 2-2 scorelines with Genoa and Parma by winning 2-1 on the road at Sassuolo.

Victory last time out came courtesy of the quickest goal ever recorded in Europe’s top-five leagues, after Rafael Leao’s scored 6.7 seconds into the contest at Mapei Stadium. Belgian midfielder Alexis Saelemaekers doubled their lead midway through the first half, maintaining the team’s 100 per cent record for scoring at least twice in every league fixture in 2020/21, before withstanding late pressure (xG: SAS 1.1 – 1.25 ACM).

Stefano Pioli’s side also remain unbeaten so far domestically – they did lose 3-0 at the San Siro to Lille in the Europa League – an impressive feat bearing in mind the talisman of this side, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has been out injured since 22 November. The Swede among a number currently sidelined, with Ismael Bennacer, Ante Rebic and now Sandro Tonali joining the Swede on the sidelines.

Lazio – Inconsistent but much better on the road?

Knowing they could ill-afford any further slip ups in a season which had already seen them drop points in more than half their league fixtures (7/12), Lazio (W6 D3 L4) delivered when it really mattered on Sunday, capitalising on Napoli’s injury woes to register a 2-0 victory against the Partenopei inside Stadio Olimpico. It marked their first win of 2020/21 against a team that finished seventh or better in Serie A last term (D2 L1 beforehand).

Simeon Inzaghi needs another big win over a big opponent in midweek, this time over the league leaders who are yet to lose since the season got underway in late September. The omens are encouraging, though, with the Biancocelesti prevailing on each of their last two visits to San Siro when facing AC Milan – winning a Coppa Italia tie 1-0 in April 2019 and 2-1 in the league the following November.

Lazio have also preferred to travel this season. Four of their six victories, along with 62 per cent of their total points, have come away from the Stadio Olimpico. Their away record reading W4 D1 L1. Meanwhile, a 1-1 stalemate in Benevento in their most recent away encounter brought an end to their three-match winning streak on the road, averaging more than two goals since a 3-0 defeat at Sampdoria in mid-October.

AC Milan Vs Lazio Betting Advice

Eight places and ten points separate the sides going into Wednesday’s encounter at the San Siro, where AC Milan are unbeaten in their last 12 Serie A matches (W8 D4) since losing 2-1 to Genoa in March. However, Lazio were one of four sides to prevail away from home against the Rossoneri last season. That at a time when the hosts were in indifferent form and before the return of Zlatan Ibrahmovic.

AC Milan Vs Lazio – Key Facts:

  • Unbeaten across the 2020/21 Serie A season so far, AC Milan have also scored two or more goals in all thirteen league fixtures this season.
  • One of the four Serie A defeats sustained by Lazio this season came away from home, scoring two or more in four of their six away fixtures.
  • Both teams traded away victories in Serie A last term; Lazio winning 2-1 here at San Siro before AC Milan returned the favour with a rousing 3-0 success at the Stadio Olimpico.

The talismanic Zlatan is once again set to miss this fixture. The Swede has undoubtedly had a galvanising effect on this team, though, who have coped admirably in his absence with three wins and two draws. They’ve also maintained their trend for scoring two or more in every Serie A fixture this season. This bodes well for goals, as Lazio have also found the back of the net at least twice in four of their six away fixtures.
