Onto the Italian Serie A, and my next pick features bottom half outfit, Atalanta, taking on surprise package, seventh placed Bologna, at their Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo as the hosts look to climb up into the top half of the Italian top flight here this afternoon.
Although Atalanta find themselves in a disappointing 12th place on the Serie A league ladder, today’s hosts are fighting on two fronts as they’re also involved in the Europa League, and their midweek 3-1 home win over Apollon should give them momentum heading into today’s clash.
Prior to last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Sampdoria, Atalanta had put together a five match unbeaten run which included wins over Sassuolo and Crotone along with three stalemates with Chievo, Fiorentina and Juventus – the latter being a 2-2 draw on home turf.
Visitors Bologna have emerged as one of the surprises of this Italian Serie A campaign so far as they sit in seventh spot and just a point behind Roma, having secured four wins from their eight league matches to date.
It’s therefore been an encouraging start for Bologna who have actually achieved three of these four wins away from home with victories gained at Benevento, Sassuolo and Genoa. However, their away record of 3-0-1 4/2 may be a little misleading – true, you still have to go and win on the road, no matter who the opposition is, but all three of their away wins have been against teams situated in the bottom four of Serie A.
This is set to be an intriguing contest then, but my money’s on the home side, Atalanta, to take the spoils in this one.
