Atalanta Preview – Can Atalanta end their mini slump at home and increase their lead over Roma?

This game marks a massive week in the context of Atalanta’s season as they face the team they are in direct competition with for a top four finish in order to qualify for next season’s Champions League. It’s then followed by the first leg of their last-16 tie in this year’s Champions League at home to Valencia on Wednesday. It’s no surprise, then, that the average goals for games involving them is also the highest at four per game. There’s no doubt they are the entertainers of Serie A but it’s a style that is also very effective for them.

Fonseca will not be too downbeat just yet, though, as his team’s attacking play has been very good and they are scoring plenty of goals. It’s at the other end where they are struggling at the moment and no clean sheet in their last eight Serie A games tells it’s own story. They have conceded 15 goals in that run of games which is just putting too much strain on their chances of winning games.

The coach also knows that a win on Saturday would put them back level with Atalanta in the race for fourth which, when you consider their recent troubles, is a big incentive.
