Following the opening match of the Championship on Friday night, this Saturday marks the first weekend of the new season in the second tier and our next preview features Blackburn Rovers playing host to Charlton Athletic as the betting tips continue at Ewood Park.

Blackburn Rovers Prediction – Can Blackburn achieve top half finish?

Inconsistency was the buzz-word around Ewood Park last season but Blackburn at least avoided another relegation battle last term.

Relegation two seasons ago saw Rovers drop down into League One but the Lancashire club bounced back up into the Championship at the first time of asking.

Manager Tony Mowbray must have been frustrated by some of the performances last season, in particular their visit to Brentford back in February.

With Rovers 2-0 up and apparently cruising, they somehow contrived to lose 5-2 to Brentford at Griffin Park and it’s these sort of results that let the hosts down last season.

Blackburn did stage a recovery though towards the end of the season as they lost just 1 of their last 6 matches .

They also suffered just 1 defeat from their last 5 matches on home turf at Ewood Park, which was a slightly surprising 1-0 loss to Stoke City.

Wins over Wigan Athletic, Derby County and Bolton Wanderers meant that Rovers finished the campaign on a high note.

Manager Tony Mowbray has added midfielder Bradley Johnson and forward and perennial loanee Sam Gallagher to his squad.

With the likes of goalscoring midfielder Bradley Dack and forward Danny Graham already in situ, Rovers have a squad capable of finishing in the top half this season.

Charlton Athletic Prediction – Can newcomers Charlton impress?

Last season ended in triumphant fashion for Charlton Athletic as Lee Bowyer’s side gained promotion back to the Championship via the play-offs.

A 2-1 win over Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley sealed promotion for The Addicks who’ll return to the Championship after three seasons in League One.

They start the new Championship season with a tough trip up to Lancashire to face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, where they’ve lost on their last 3 visits.

Charlton’s work ethic last season saw the side knit together under manager, Bowyer, but the departures of defender Bauer and midfielder Bielik will be hard to replace.

Bowyer will be hoping that the likes of midfielders Williams and Aneke can provide the creative spark while Pratley is the glue in the middle of the park.

However, options up front seem to be very thin on the ground with former Leyton Orient striker, Macauley Bonne, looking their best chance of goals.

Indeed, Bonne plundered a total of 45 goals in his last two seasons at The O’s but these were scored in the National League, so the Championship may present a harder challenge.

Key-Facts – Blackburn Rovers v Charlton Athletic

  • Blackburn Rovers lost just 1 of their last 6 matches in the Championship last term
  • Charlton Athletic were promoted from League One at the end of last season
  • Blackburn Rovers have won the last 3 meetings at home against Charlton Athletic

Betting Tips Verdict

Blackburn’s know-how and greater quality in midfield and attacking areas should take the points here, but Charlton will give it a go.
