Burnley Preview – Can Clarets extend solid run?

Burnley also suffered the heartache and considerable financial loss following last season’s relegation from the Premier League but the hosts have at least made a solid and decent start to this new Championship campaign as The Clarets have suffered just one defeat so far in this new campaign, which came in the shape of a 1-0 loss away from home at fellow relegated side, Watford, earlier in the season.

However, victories gained over last season’s play-off finalists, Huddersfield Town, along with wins against Wigan Athletic 5-1 away from home and a solid 2-0 home win against Millwall have given Burnley a firm platform from which they’ll be hoping to launch a successful campaign with at least a play-off spot being the minimum requirement.

Burnley have also picked up points in draws with Luton Town, Hull City, Blackpool, West Brom and Preston NE, the latter two both being away from home but the Lancashire club now return to Turf Moor for this Saturday’s clash against Bristol City, whom they’ve beaten in each of the previous three meetings at home.

It’s been six seasons since Burnley last found themselves in the Championship but results at home have been extremely strong with the hosts being unbeaten in their last 17 matches at Turf Moor, picking up 10 wins in the process along with keeping an impressive 11 clean sheets as well.

The hosts will be without defender Kevin Long and midfielder Scott Twine with injuries while midfielder Ashley Westwood remains a long-term absentee with a broken leg.

Bristol City Preview – Can Robins prove last defeat was a blip?

A 3-2 loss away from home at Norwich City put an end to Bristol City’s previously encouraging and impressive six-match unbeaten run in the Championship under manager, Nigel Pearson, which produced four wins and two draws and helped lift the west country visitors up into the top half of the second tier and within touching distance of the early play-off pack.

Despite suffering back to back defeats at the start of this new Championship campaign against Hull City and Sunderland, victories against Luton Town, Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers have seen Bristol City bounce back in style although it should be mentioned that three of these four wins for The Robins were achieved on home soil at Ashton Gate.

However, switch to results away from home and Bristol City’s returns look much more modest as the visitors have picked up just four wins out of their last 22 matches overall in the English second tier, with victories at Blackburn Rovers (twice), Stoke City and Derby County but also being on the end of 14 defeats as well.

Bristol City have also found clean sheets hard to come by on their travels in the second tier as The Robins have only managed two shut outs in these 22 away games, whilst also conceding 2 goals or more in 18 of these 22 games which is an alarming statistic for Pearson and his defensive unit.

Pearson will be without the services of defender Toma Kalas and midfielder Ayman Benarous with injuries while reserve keeper Stefan Bajic and influential Swiss defender Timm Klose, are both rated as questionable for this trip to Burnley.

Burnley v Bristol City

Key Facts – Burnley v Bristol City Tip

  • Burnley unbeaten in their last 17 matches at Turf Moor
  • Bristol City have picked up just 4 wins out of their last 22 away matches
  • Burnley have won 3 of their last 4 home meetings against Bristol City

Burnley have made themselves a tough unit to beat under new manager, Vincent Kompany, and as one would expect, the hosts have been particularly strong at the back which could prove to be troublesome for the visitors, Bristol City, whose defensive unit has been unable to keep clean sheets on the road and this could prove to be pivotal at Turf Moor on Saturday afternoon, with Burnley the favourites to grab all three points.
