Preview: This time last season we would have had a Premier League fixture on our hands, with Cardiff and Huddersfield set to meet once again only this time in the slightly less glamorous environment of the Championship. The two encounters between them both ended goalless in 2018/19 but the early signs are that we could be in for a much livelier affair inside the Cardiff City Stadium in Wales.

Cardiff City Preview – Bluebirds to make it two wins from two in Wales?

Of teams to have been demoted from the Premier League last term, Cardiff should have the strongest claims for making an immediate return after ending the campaign higher up the league table. In fact, the Bluebirds were very unfortunate to have been relegated at all considering they were arguably no worse than a Brighton side that finished one place above them in safety. They will receive no sympathy back down in the Championship, however.

It has been a brutal dose of reality for Neil Warnock’s men so far. The weekend’s pitiful display away at Reading, in which they were heavily beaten 3-0, being the latest defeat in a campaign that has already seen them lose their opening fixture at Wigan Athletic (3-2). Not to mention conceding a bucket load of goals. In fact, no team in the English second tier has shipped more often than their 7. For a Warnock team that are usually very difficult to beat, this has to be of concern.

Being back in Wales will offer some respite, though. After all, this was the setting for their one and only triumph to date – beating Luton Town 2-1 in their second fixture. Even that win, however, could have been so different were it not for the intervention of forward Isaac Vassell, the forward finding a winning goal right at the death. It was far from convincing, just like their season so far.

Best Cardiff Bet – Over 2.5 Goals @ 11/10 Unibet? This would have been a successful selection in all three of Cardiff’s opening league games, with their first outing in Wigan producing five goals before contests with Luton and Reading producing precisely three. No team has conceded more often so far than The Bluebirds.

Huddersfield Town Preview – Terriers to finally end their barren run in Wales?

Having departed the Premier League following one of the poorest, most abject performances over the course of a full season in living memory, Huddersfield supporters could at the very least be forgiven for harbouring some excitement at the prospect of getting back to winning games again back down a division. Unfortunately for them, that still hasn’t come to fruition even though we are now three games in.

It is almost as though nothing has changed. The Terriers’ dismal campaign in the league above came to an end without them winning any of their final ten matches. When you combine their sluggish start to life back in the Championship it now becomes no win in their last thirteen league games (D3 L10). Therefore it didn’t come as much of a surprise when news broke immediately after their 2-1 home defeat to Fulham on Saturday that manager Jan Siewert had been relieved of his duties.

Effectively then, it will be a manageress Huddersfield making this long trip to Wales. Desperately hoping to secure its first win of the season; they were beaten 2-1 at home by Derby County on the opening weekend, followed by a 1-1 draw at QPR before that aforementioned defeat against Fulham that ultimately cost the manager his job. All three games featured both teams on the scoresheet, which could appeal to both teams to score backers.

Best Huddersfield Bet – Karlan Grant Anytime Scorer @ 11/4 Unibet? Huddersfield’s only point thus far did come in an away fixture, in a 1-1 draw at QPR courtesy of Karlan Grant converting his spot-kick. The forward has been the one bright spark for The Terriers in an otherwise miserable campaign to date, with the 21-year-old scoring in every fixture and will be bidding to make it four in a row in Wales.

Cardiff V Huddersfield Key Facts:

  • Cardiff have begun the 2019/20 EFL Championship by losing two out of three fixtures (W1 L2), but did win their only home match so far.
  • Huddersfield’s failure to win any of their opening three fixtures in the 2019/20 EFL Championship has extended their winless run in league games to thirteen (D3 L10).
  • These teams played each other twice in the Premier League last season, with both meetings unable to produce a single goal scored.

Betting Summary

As worrisome as the early form of Cardiff undoubtedly is, Neil Warnock sides are rarely downtrodden for very long. A response should be forthcoming, particularly after the weekend’s emphatic 3-0 defeat at Reading. Nevertheless, it is still two defeats in three so far and the sort of form which makes them hard to trust at present.

If Huddersfield fans thought their team couldn’t get much worse than when they were in the Premier League, they were seemingly mistaken. Playing supposedly lesser opposition has not helped their cause, as with three games now played The Terriers remain winless. Which now means we are talking about a team that has failed to win any of its previous thirteen league matches (D3 L10).

At home, and facing a team lacking a permanent manager at the time of writing, Cardiff should justifiably fancy their chances. I, on the other hand, am less confident. The Bluebirds are still likely to be without a host of key players, none more so than goalkeeper Neil Etheridge as well as defender Sol Bamba. Therefore the leakiest defence in the league is unlikely to suddenly improve. Huddersfield have at least scored in every fixture so far, meaning there is further scope for more goals here.
