Charlton Athletic Preview – Can the Addick seal a much-needed three points?

After being promoted from EFL League One last season, Charlton Athletic have had a tough time back in the second tier of English football. The Addicks made a solid start, but they have picked up just four league wins since October.

Overall, Lee Bowyer’s boys have won ten, lost 17 and drawn nine of 36 league matches. After a much-needed 3-1 home victory over fellow strugglers Luton Town, the London side have failed to kick on, losing 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday before an embarrassing 4-0 reverse to Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium last weekend.

Despite their relegation fears, Charlton have been hard to beat at home, with just Blackburn Rovers winning on their patch in league action in 2020. With several winnable home games on the horizon, Athletic will fancy their chances of staying up. Three points on Saturday would certainly help their cause.

Middlesbrough Preview – Can Boro win for the first time since New Year’s Day?

Middlesbrough ended 2019 in stunning form, winning their last three games of the decade. However, since winning 2-0 at Preston North End on New Year’s Day, which was a fourth victory on the spin, Jonathan Woodgate’s troops have failed to win any of their following 12 across all competitions.

After successive 1-0 defeats to Luton, Barnsley and Leeds United, though, Middlesbrough did stop the rot with a 2-2 draw with promotion chasing Nottingham Forest at the Riverside Stadium last Monday night. On the road, however, Boro have taken just one point from the last 12 on offer.

Woodgate has had a difficult time since taking over at the Riverside Stadium, guiding his beloved club to just eight Championship wins from 36 matches. Boro are in the bottom three ahead of Saturday’s crunch match at Charlton, and defeat would only worsen their situation. However, a win will lift them out of the relegation zone with nine matches left to play.

Charlton Athletic vs Middlesbrough Betting Advice

The meeting at the Riverside in December was the first Middlesbrough v Charlton fixture since March 2016. It was a close encounter between two well matched teams, with Boro just edging it on home turf. George Saville’s first-minute strike proved to be the only goal of the game.

Key Facts – Charlton Athletic vs Middlesbrough Betting Tip

  • Charlton have lost just one home league match since mid-December
  • Middlesbrough have not won since a 2-0 victory at Preston on New Year’s Day
  • Boro have taken a solitary point from the last 12 available

I’m predicting Saturday’s clash to be another close one between the pair, but home advantage could be a key again. I fancy Charlton to return the favour with a 1-0 win of their own. The 1-0 home victory is nicely priced at 15/2.

Despite playing just 21 times this season, Lyle Taylor has scored an impressive 11 Championship goals. The striker netted twice in Athletic’s recent 3-1 home win over Luton. Back Taylor to score first on Saturday at 11/2.
