Derby County’s automatic promotion hopes took a slight dent last time out away at east midlands rivals Nottingham Forest when they were beaten at the City Ground by a 1-0 margin, but they can get back on track this afternoon when they play host to Cardiff City at the iPro Stadium.
Prior to the defeat before the international break, Derby had put together three Championship wins on the bounce with wins over Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United and QPR which had placed them in the play-off pack, and they still remain in fifth spot ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.
At home, The Rams have shown solid form on home turf where they’ve racked up four straight wins on the trot at the expense of Brentford and Wolves along with the aforementioned Rotherham and QPR in an overall record of 4-3-1 13/6. Strikers Martin and Russell look the likely anytime goalscorer candidates.
Visitors Cardiff City currently sit just outside of the play-off pack in 7th place and three points behind Birmingham City, as The Bluebirds have lost just once in their last eight matches in the Championship.
Cardiff have also recently beaten Middlesbrough and Reading although these were both registered at their Cardiff City Stadium, while Cardiff’s away form has been a little more circumspect as their overall record of 1-5-2 7/8 shows.
Along with Brighton, Cardiff City have drawn the most number of away matches so far this season in the division and a lack of goals on their travels has probably been the cause of so many stalemates to date.
Of the two sides, Derby County definitely possess the greater cutting edge up front so I’ll back The Rams for a straight win here.
