Fulham – Back to the important business of promotion?

Marco Silva’s men don’t have to wait long to put the disappointment of their weekend FA Cup exit out of their minds. Fulham had been in terrific form prior to Saturday’s 4-1 loss at Etihad Stadium to Man City, where the class of the opposition told after Fabio Carvalho had given the visitors a surprise early lead. They return to Championship action atop the table and unbeaten in their last five (W4 D1), scoring 24 times.

Blackpool denied them a fifth consecutive league victory last time with a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage, though Silva will wonder how how side contrived to throw away points from such a dominant display. Still, that is now one defeat across their last 17 fixtures in the second tier (W11 D5). That was to Sheffield United before Christmas, one of only four visiting sides to have taken points from the Cottagers since September.

Key Stat: Each of Fulham’s first four Championship matches at the start of this year saw five or more goals, a trend that was ended by a 1-1 draw at home to Blackpool in their most recent league outing.

 

 

Millwall – Play-off hopes hanging by a thread?

Three wins from the last twelve in the Championship has dented the play-off aspirations of the Bermondsey outfit, who sit eight points back from the top six coming into this midweek round. It is a gap which could be set to grow ahead of a daunting run of games that sees Gary Rowett and his team face three of the current top four, starting with a visit to the free-scoring league leaders who beat them 2-1 in the reverse fixture.

Millwall have now gone seven meetings without a win, losing five, since a 1-0 scoreline at Craven Cottage in August 2014. However, four points from the last two matches, unable to follow up their 2-0 win over promotion hopefuls West Brom when they were subsequently held by Preston last time out, will mean they head to West London in reasonable form. Yet it is one win from the last seven on the road (D1 L5).
