Genoa Preview – Still plenty of fight left in Il Grifone?

Life as a Genoa (18th – W5 D7 L12) supporter was looking bleak not that long ago. The club are still languishing in the Serie A relegation zonel, but are now a point from safety after collecting eight of the last twelve points (W2 D2) to give their previously ailing survival bid the timely boost it needed. Another positive outcome on Sunday, at their Stadio Luigi Ferrari where four of their five Serie A wins in 2019-20 were recorded, could see them finally clamber out of the bottom three.

It looks a tall order, though. Their opponents have lost two league games all season and none at all since late September. Recent form and history is on their side, however; Genoa are targeting a third consecutive win on Sunday, having beaten Cagliari (1-0) and Bologna (0-3) in their last two Serie A encounters, while a last-gasp goal from defender Domenico Criscito sealed a 2-1 comeback victory in this same fixture last season.

Criscito has certainly played his part in the team’s recent revival as well, in particularly by marshalling a defence which has now kept three clean sheets during a four-game unbeaten stretch (W2 D2). The club captain has also taken responsibility from the spot, converting penalties in a hard-earned 2-2 draw away to Atalanta and in last week’s comfortable victory in Bologna. The 33-year-old is 15/2 (Unibet) to score on Sunday.

Lazio Preview – Inzaghi’s men in it for the long haul?

Those still dubious about how genuine Lazio‘s (2nd – W17 D5 L2) title ambitions are may have been forced into a change of heart after last weekend’s win in Rome over Inter Milan. A thoroughly deserved win according to expected goals, with Simone Inzaghi’s side comfortably winning the xG battle as they limited their opponents to precious little in front of goal in a 2-1 victory which sent them second in the table, only a point off leaders Juventus.

Last week’s important triumph was the fourth occasion in which this team fought back from a losing position to win this season, having also managed the feat at home to Juventus in December. So they have shown there is plenty of character to this side, which has needed to be the case at times but particularly of late. Among their most recent outcomes included a couple of low-scoring draws with Roma (1-1) and Verona (0-0), a narrow win in Parma (0-1) and a comfortable success at home to SPAL (5-1).

Certainly it would seem as though there has been a more measured approach recently, or perhaps nerves are beginning to creep in. Yet we are now approaching five months since they were last beaten in league action, winning 15 of the last 19 in Serie A since a 1-0 loss at Inter Milan on 25 September. Victory at Parma in their latest away outing meanwhile made it six wins in seven away from home, with five of those coming by the way of 2-1 scorelines. That correct score is 15/2 (Bet365).

Genoa Vs Lazio Betting Advice

A quick glance at the table in Serie A would give the impression that a comfortable afternoon awaits for Lazio, who are unbeaten in their last nineteen league games and have won six of their past seven encounters on the road. The home side will have other ideas, though. Genoa have not lost in four games (W2 D2) winning the last two, and secured the majority (4 of 5) of their victories this season on home soil. Moreover, the hosts prevailed 2-1 in this fixture last season.

Genoa Vs Lazio – Key Facts

  • After winning 3-0 on the road in Bologna last time out, Genoa secured their first back-to-backs wins of the season. I Rossoblu are now unbeaten in four in the league (W2 D2).
  • Victory at home to title rivals Inter Milan last weekend, coming from a goal down to win 2-1, extended Lazio‘s unbeaten league run to nineteen (W15 D4). They’ve won six of their last seven away matches in Serie A.
  • This has not been a kind fixture over the years for Lazio, who have won only once (3-2 in 2017) on their previous nine visits in Serie A (W1 D3 L5).

This should be a competitive affair, then. However, Lazio have established a habit for grinding out wins on their travels. Not only would they come out on top in six of the previous seven said matches, all six were by a single goal margin. The one thing they haven’t done much of is preventing their hosts from scoring, having kept two clean sheets away from home all season. With Genoa suddenly finding form, there is every chance that both teams net here.
