Inter Milan Preview – Will Inter continue their dominant run in the derby?
Inter ended a decade long wait with their title triumph last season and are in pole position to retain it this time around. The pressure was on Simone Inzaghi to follow in the footsteps of Antonio Conte and he appears to be relishing that challenge. Inter are top of Serie A, four points clear of Napoli and Milan and perhaps crucially, with a game in hand over both of those clubs. It is a strong position for them to be in heading into the second derby of the season.
You have to go all the way back to the middle of October for the last time Inter lost a Serie A game, that coming away to Lazio. Since then they have won 11 and drawn three, showing all the consistency you would want from a title contender.
They’re not looking for an eighth straight win at home in Serie A. That is still some way short of the record set last season when they won 18 consecutive. Somewhat ironically, their last defeat in the league at the San Siro was as the home team in the derby fixture last season – going down 2-1 in October 2020.
Not wanting to rest on their laurels, Inter have strengthened their squad in the winter transfer window. Robin Gosens has been a standout for Atalanta in recent seasons and he could make his debut here.
AC Milan Preview – Can Milan revive their title hopes with what would be a huge three points?
Milan may not have won the title last season but it was still a much improved performance to finish second and qualify for the Champions League. The gap between themselves and Inter was 22 points but it appears again they have improved and will at least finish closer than that this time around.
Stefano Pioli will not be aiming for just finishing closer, though, he will be looking to get three points here and keep the pressure on their arch rivals as Milan chase their first title since 2011.

It has not been as strong a start to the New Year for Milan as it has their opponents. A 2-1 defeat by Spezia was hugely surprising, albeit somewhat unfortunate due to refereeing decisions. They then didn’t do nearly enough to overcome Juventus last time out in a drab goalless draw.
Only Atalanta have picked up more points away from home than Milan in Serie A this season. Their record of eight wins and two draws indicates just how strong they are on their travels and the only loss was away to Fiorentina in what remains arguably the game of the season so far (4-3 back in November).
