Inter Milan Preview – Bigger spending means greater level of scrutiny?
The Nerazzurri kick-off their 2020/21 Serie A campaign a week later than most, which merely means another largely uninterrupted seven days for the insatiable Antonio Conte to demand even more new players. The combustible Italian threatened to leave at the end of last season. Now, he appears to have the Inter Milan board at his beck and call, convincing the club to recruit Arturo Vidal, Alex Kolarov and Achraf Hakimi during the off-season.
Then there were the permanent deals for Nicolo Barella, Stefano Sensi and Alexis Sanchez. This on top of landing his top targets of Romelu Lukaku, Ashley Young and Christian Eriksen in 2019/20. Such outlay demands a genuine title challenge, and Inter are many people’s idea of a good bet to go one better than last season, when finishing a mere point behind perennial champs Juventus who, admittedly, eased off towards the end.
Inter should have recovered sufficiently from their Europa League final exertions on 21 August. They’ve squeezed in two modest friendlies in an effort to get up to speed, scoring a combined twelve times against Pisa and Lugano. I’m not sure Conte will have allowed for any rust to settle, nor will he contemplate a slow start to the season. Meanwhile, Inter finished last season eight games unbeaten in Serie A (W5 D3).
Fiorentina Preview – La Viola steadily improving under Iachini?
In what felt like a real grind, Fiorentina were rewarded for sheer dogged persistance on Matchday 1. The side from Florence scoring twelve minutes from the end of their contest at the Artemio Franchi with Torino to register a 1-0 win on the opening weekend. The breakthrough seemed a long time coming but didn’t actually arrive until a powerful, marauding run down the right flank from Federico Chiesa found an unmarked Gaetano Castrovilli.
La Viola can make their way to the San Siro feeling more relaxed knowing that should the worst occur, they already have three points to fall back on. Not that they are expected to wilt on Saturday evening. Fiorentina have earned a share of the spoils in each of their previous three Serie A meetings with Inter Milan, holding the Nerazzurri to a goalless draw (xG: INT 2.76 – 0.92 FIO) in Milan as recently as July.
Fiorentina were fortunate to escape with a point here on that occasion. It was, however, one of several eye-catching results under Giuseppe Iachini who, since his appointment in December, has dramatically improved the club’s Serie A fortunes.
