Preview: It is all to play for at San Siro on Saturday. A win for Inter Milan sends them top of the Serie A table, above AC Milan who are in action on Sunday. However, the Nerrazzuri can expect strong resistance in Jose Mourinho and his Roma side, out to protect an unbeaten league run which stretches back to January.

Inter Milan – League and cup double very much alive?

The Nerazzurri carry serious momentum into what is, on paper, their most difficult remaining assignment in the Serie A run-in. Simone Inzaghi’s men haven’t lost a competitive fixture since February, straying into double digits for games unbeaten (10 – W6 D4) with Tuesday’s 3-0 demolition of Milanese rivals AC in the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Thus keeping alive aspirations of a league and cup double.

Inzaghi’s men are on a roll then at just the right time. Last week’s 3-1 victory away to Spezia bringing up a third straight Serie A win, a run which begun with a hard-fought 1-0 scoreline at Juventus. Here at San Siro meanwhile, Inter have picked up seven points from a possible nine since the start of March but have often come unstuck versus the better teams: failing to beat all of Atalanta, Fiorentina, Juventus and Milan.

Key Stat: Inter are seeking a fourth consecutive Serie A victory, having led at half-time and full-time in all of their previous three (vs Hellas Verona, Juventus and Spezia).

Roma – Jose’s men aren’t accepting of defeat?

Stephan El Shaarawy has featured sparingly for the Giallorossi this season, but how important could his equaliser in second-half stoppage-time of last Monday’s 1-1 draw in Naples against Napoli turn out to be? The very fact it preserved their long unbeaten run in Serie A, which is now up to 12 (W7 D5), means it could be priceless, maintaining their momentum ahead of a run-in that could still garner a top four finish.

Roma sit five points off Juventus and the final Champions League berth, while Lazio are only two points back in sixth. Every result and point matters then. Across the last seven games though, nobody has collected more (17 – W5 D2) than Jose Mourinho’s in-form charges. However, away from home, against the better sides, they have toiled more often than not, with a record that reads W1 D1 L3 away to the top eight.

Key Stat: Stephan El Shaarawy’s late equaliser last time out in Naples means Roma have scored in eight consecutive Serie A away matches, failing to find the net just one occasion across their past 12 said fixtures.

Inter Milan Vs Roma Betting Advice

Much of the build up will predominantly fall on Jose Mourinho’s return to his former stomping ground, having led Inter Milan to a famous treble in 2010. Any sentiment must be put on hold, though, with the Portuguese determined to plot the downfall of his former employers as he seeks out a 13th-straight Serie A game without defeat as Roma boss. Inter, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their ten competitive fixtures.

Inter Milan Vs AS Roma – Key Facts:

  • It is second (Inter Milan; W20 D3 L2) versus fifth (Roma; W17 D7 L9) at San Siro, with the former out to preserve a 10-game unbeaten sequence in head-to-head matches.
  • There have been six draws among their previous nine meetings, with three successive Serie A draws, all of which saw no more than two goals, haven taken plane between the sides here at San Siro prior to Inter’s 3-1 victory last season.
  • Both sides arrive in outstanding form. Inter haven’t lost a competitive game in ten (W6 D4) whereas Roma are unbeaten across their last 12 Serie A contests (W7 D5).

So it’s shaping up to be an ultra-competitive showdown at San Siro. Inter will feel they hold the upper hand, though, following their 3-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico earlier in the season. The Nerazzurri’s third successive head-to-head victory having remained unbeaten across the last ten meetings in league and cup (W4 D6). The vast majority ended in stalemate, however, and I think this has the makings of another.
