Italian Serie A

Preview: This fixture has a lot to live up to after last season’s absorbing contests between the sides delivered an abundance of goals and drama, the clash at Juventus Stadium ending 2-2 as a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty quashed Sassuolo’s spirited fightback. Is a repeat, between teams currently fourth and fifth in Serie A, on the cards?

Juventus – Champions gaining their points the hard way?

The Old Lady (W8 D6 L1) did themselves and their fellow Scudetto aspirants a huge favour on Wednesday when consigning AC Milan to their first Serie A defeat of the season, as an inspired Federico Chiesa, who struck twice at the San Siro, steered Juventus back to within seven points of the summit. Yet they remain fourth, behind Roma and Inter who meet in the weekend’s standout fixture earlier in the day.

It has been quite the response from the nine-time defending champions, who have scored seven times across their last two matches, both coming in victories over Udinese here in Turin and away to Milan, since succumbing to a surprising 3-0 loss at home to Fiorentina in their final fixture of 2020. That against a team who were in disarray, with La Viola winless in eight league games beforehand.

Results like that go some way to explaining why Andrea Pirlo’s men aren’t currently closer to the leading pack, even if they do retain a game in hand. However, Juve have raised their levels of late, registering maximum points in five of the last seven (W5 D1 L1) whilst averaging 2.4 goals per game. They continue to leak them just as frequently, though, shutting out one of their past eight Serie A opposition.

Sassuolo – Among Serie A’s most capable travellers?

Signs that the Neroverdi (W8 D5 L3) are already beginning to run out of steam have been evident for some time now. After an eight-game unbeaten start, Roberto De Zerbi has seen his team lose three of the next eight – all to sides in and around them (Atalanta, Inter and Roma) which isn’t exactly encouraging ahead of their visits to Juventus. Admittedly, this was a fixture they excelled in last season.

In 2019/20, Sassuolo came close to beating the perennial Italian champs home and away, only to end up settling for a point both times. De Zerbi’s men fought back 1-0 down to lead 2-1 in Turin before a Ronaldo penalty spared the home side’s blushes, while they clawed back a 2-0 deficit in the home fixture to take a 3-2 lead early in the second half, only to be pegged back to 3-3 just past the hour.

Those encounters now mean all of the last six Serie A meetings have gone Over 2.5 Goals. With Sassuolo netting in seven of eight away games this season, boasting more points on the road (17 – W5 D2 L1) than all bar AC Milan, there is every likelihood for further drama on Sunday. However, their away form has begun to wane recently, recording one win across the last four said fixtures (W1 D2 L1).

Juventus Vs Sassuolo Betting Advice

A single point is all that separates the clubs in Serie A, which is testament to the outstanding work being done by Roberto De Zerbi at Sassuolo. However, crunch games against the top sides have, more often than not, been a bridge too far. As despite earning credible results at both Napoli (won 2-0) and Roma (0-0), the Neroverdi were beaten by all of AC Milan (1-2), Inter (1-3) and absolutely routed in Atalanta (5-1).

Juventus Vs Sassuolo – Key Facts:

  • Four of Juventus‘ last six Serie A fixtures have seen Over 3.5 Goals land, with The Old Lady netting three or more on four occasions across this run of games.
  • Three of the last four Serie A matches at Juventus Stadium seen both teams score, meanwhile both teams have netted in each of Sassuolo‘s last three away fixtures.
  • Last season’s league meetings both finished in high-scoring draws (2-2 at Juventus, 3-3 in Sassuolo), halting Juve‘s seven-match winning streak in head-to-heads.

Since losing for the first time in 2020/21, going down 3-0 at home to Fiorentina before Christmas, Juve have won 4-1 and 3-1 against Udinese and AC Milan, respectively, to remind everyone they are not going away. There are still question marks defensively, though, with one clean sheet in eight and none in the last four at Juventus Stadium, where Sassuolo found the net twice in a thrilling 2-2 draw last term.
