Preview: There are no shortage of exciting fixtures in Europe this weekend, but perhaps none more so than the contest at Stadio Olimpico. Lazio boast an impressive record at this ground but are coming up against the best team in the country at this precise juncture, an AC Milan side which isn’t even giving up goals let alone losing matches.

Lazio – Aquile having to fight for European qualification?

A third consecutive top-six finish remains very much on the cards, but is far from a formality. Fiorentina are enjoying an outstanding campaign and are breathing down the necks of Maurizio Sarri’s men, who occupy sixth – the final automatic qualifying position for a place in Europe next term – on goal difference alone. That cranks up the pressure somewhat ahead of Sunday’s daunting visit from the Serie A leaders.

Lazio have every reason to be fearful, too. The Biancocelesti have already lost twice to their opponents in 2021-22, both in Milan and without scoring (4-0 & 2-0). Perhaps that means they will have a point to prove at the Stadio Olimpico, where they boast an enviable record of just two league defeats across last 29 matches – though wins for Juventus and Napoli at this venue this season show it can be done.

Key Stat: Lazio are looking to score for the sixth successive Serie A home game, having failed to net in only two of 16 such matches all season. However, both those instances were against top teams: 0-0 vs Atalanta, 2-0 loss to Juventus.

AC Milan – Will a mean Rossoneri rearguard hold up in Rome?

The Rossoneri’s prospect of making it a league and cup double this season were ended earlier in the week, and emphatically so, beaten 3-0 by Inter Milan in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. It marked a first competitive loss since the middle of January. However, they remain unbeaten in Serie A across their last eleven outings (W6 D5), and so will be confident of picking up at least a point from Sunday’s visit to Rome.

The last seven of those have all seen fewer than three goals, largely on account of a Milan defence that simply doesn’t concede any more. Their recent 2-0 win at San Siro against Genoa seeing them register a sixth successive Serie A clean sheet. Stefano Pioli’s team preferring to grind it out rather than try to outscore opponents, something which could prove crucial up against a Lazio outfit who can score freely.

Key Stat: Four of AC Milan’s previous five Serie A victories came via 1-0 scorelines. Expect a patient approach also, as just one first-half goal has been scored by the Rossoneri across their last five away league outings.

Lazio Vs AC Milan Betting Advice

Much has been and will be made of the run-in that awaits AC Milan as they close in on what would be a first Serie A title since 2011. Sunday’s visit to Rome to take on a Lazio side which is seldom beaten in their own backyard doesn’t come much tougher, but this is a Milan made of sterner stuff. The Rossoneri boast an 11-game unbeaten league run coming into this contest, having not as much as conceded in any of their last six.

Lazio Vs AC Milan – Key Facts:

  • AC Milan already have two victories over Lazio in 2021-22. Both were in Milan, though, following up a 2-0 success in the league by hammering the Biancocelesti 4-0 in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals in February.
  • Here in Rome, however, it has been a different story entirely for the Rossoneri, whose 3-0 win two seasons ago still stands as their sole victory away to Lazio in more than seven years (W1 D4 L2 in all competitions away to Lazio since 2015).
  • Only two of the past nine competitive meetings between the sides produced both teams scoring, while all of the three previous encounters at Stadio Olimpico saw at least one side register a clean sheet.

So, will Lazio be able to do what none of Milan’s previous six opponents could not: score a goal? Atalanta and Juventus successfully shut out Maurizio Sarri’s charges here at Stadio Olimpico this season, though it is clearly a difficult feat. Interestingly, though, there has been a clean sheet for one of these sides in seven of the past nine meetings, which includes their league and cup clashes this season. Milan winning both to nil.
