Lazio Preview – Big-game mentality too often lacking?

Atalanta’s recent hold over the Biancocelesti continued in midweek with a 4-1 victory inside Stadio Olimpico, as Lazio were made to pay heavily for spurning several gilt-edged opportunities. Conversely, their opponents, who have now won four of the last five Serie A meetings, were in ruthless mood, converting four times in a contest the hosts actually created the better chances in (xG: LAZ 2.27 – 1.89 ATA).

It isn’t expected to get much easier for Simone Inzaghi and Lazio. They face last season’s runners-up next, an Inter Milan side who have strengthened considerably during the summer but were beaten 2-1 in this fixture back in February, despite taking the lead shortly before half-time through Ashley Young. That one of fourteen victories (W14 D3 L2) in the league on home soil in 2019/20.

Depending on how you spin it, though, this Lazio team has either won four of its last five Serie A matches or lost seven of thirteen (W5 D1 L7). Their form during post-lockdown was abysmal, and while they begun this season with a fairly routine 2-0 triumph away at Cagliari – with last season’s leading marksman, Ciro Immobile, up and running – Wednesday marked their fifth straight league defeat versus top-seven opposition.

Inter Milan Preview – Nerazzurri targeting win number six in a row?

Regardless of whether Antonio Conte steers them back to the top of Italian football, this season promises to be an exhilarating spectacle as far as Inter Milan are concerned. In 2019/20, only Juventus finished above them (by one point), while Atalanta were the only team to plunder more goals (17 more, in fact). So far they are two wins out of two in 2020/21, having found the back of the net more often (9) than anyone else.

Having put four past Fiorentina in their opening fixture at the San Siro, albeit two of those were scored near the death in a 4-3 victory that was anything but convincing, the Nerazzurri would then follow it up by sinking newly-promoted Benevento. The 5-2 scoreline inside Stadio Ciro Vigorito making it the highest scoring fixture of the season to date, whilst continuing Inter’s trend for winning in spite of conceding.

Meanwhile Romelu Lukaku, the club’s top scorer last season with 23 goals, already has three for the season after scoring in both encounters. The Belgian will look to impose his powerful presence on a fixture he failed to notch in last term, home or away. Should he manage to do so, Inter Milan will stand an excellent chance of extending their winning run in the league to six, having not lost any of the last ten (W7 D3).

Lazio Vs Inter Milan Betting Advice

Although these are two of the most potent attacks in Serie A, the goals didn’t exactly flow when they met last season. A 1-0 win for Inter at the San Siro preceded a 2-1 victory for Lazio in Rome. Sunday could well prove an exception, though, based on the early evidence from this season, with both teams looking menacing as ever going forward as well as offering up plenty of encouragement with some questionable defending.

Lazio Vs Inter Milan – Key Facts

  • Only Juventus (1) recorded fewer home defeats last season than Lazio (W14 D3 L2), whose 46 goals from 19 home games put them behind only Atalanta (51).
  • No team in Serie A in 2019/20 came away with more points from their away fixtures than Inter Milan (W13 D4 L2), while their 41 away goals was also superior than all bar Atalanta (47).
  • The home side prevailed in both head-to-head meetings in Serie A last term, with Lazio‘s 2-1 victory at the Olimpico ending a run of three consecutive away victories for Inter.

Backing goals is hardly an original pick, nor is it a given, with only two of the last six Serie A meetings finishing with both teams on target. Both of these encounters were at the Olimpico though, where three of the last four head-to-heads between the sides have produced Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score. That bet, coupled with Immobile and Lakuku both scoring, is around 4/1 with Betfair’s Same Game Multi.
