Preview: The first Derby della Capitale of 2021-22 promises to be a lively affair between two sides who certainly know their way to goal this season but continue to look suspect defensively. Can Jose Mourinho’s Roma land their first away victory in this fixture since 2016?

Lazio – Sarri’s men with work to do?

The Biancocelesti started the season in inspired form, scoring nine across the first two matchdays alone. It helped to be facing a couple of recently promoted sides in the shape of Empoli and Spezia, and the fixtures predictably stiffened thereafter, but not considerably so and certainly not to the extent that two points from games against AC Milan (2-0), Cagliari (2-2h) and Torino (1-1a) constitutes a healthy return.

Consequently, it is Maurizio Sarri’s men who come into Sunday’s Derby della Capitale with ground to make up and something to prove. Yet they’ve been unconvincing of late, failing to win any of the last four in all competitions (D2 L2) having conceded in all six competitive outings in 2021-22. Torino did enough to win Thursday’s contest in Turin, with Lazio limp in all aspects until Ciro Immobile’s late penalty salvaged a draw.

Key Stat: Since the start of last season, Lazio have scored in 20 of 21 home matches in the league. Only failing to do so in their final home game of last season (0-0 vs Torino).

Roma – Mourinho already working his magic?

Jose Mourinho’s reign in Rome couldn’t have begun much better. Aside from a 3-2 defeat away to Hellas Verona, which was the only time this season they were beaten on xG, his Roma side has made quite the early impression with four wins out of five. A couple of those were slight in margin – having to grind it out on occasion is par for the course under the Portuguese – but it hasn’t stopped them rattling in the goals.

After five rounds only the current top two, Inter Milan and Napoli, boast more in the goals column than the twelve of the Giallorossi, with all but their midweek 1-0 win over Udinese here at the Stadio Olimpico seeing three or more goals. Technically, however, Roma are the away side for this, even if it is played at their usual stomping ground. They’ve scored at least twice in each of their last three Serie A away matches.

Key Stat: Roma have one win from their last nine Serie A away fixtures (D2 L6), despite managing to score 2+ goals in five including each of the past three.

Lazio Vs Roma Betting Advice

If this contest was decided on momentum, then there would only be one winner. Lazio have hit a lull since opening their campaign with big wins over modest opposition, and come into Sunday’s clash winless in four in all competitions. The hosts are without a clean sheet all season, which will be music to the ears of Jose Mourinho. His Roma side are flying, scoring twelve in winning four out of five in Serie A.

Lazio Vs Roma – Key Facts:

  • None of the previous eight Derby della Capitale fixtures were won by the visiting team on the day, with the home side winning to nil in both meetings in 2020-21.
  • Lazio will need to overcome a dip in form if they’re to make it three wins in four as the hosts in this fixture, failing to win any of the last four games in all competitions (D2 L2).
  • Roma have made an excellent start to life under Jose Mourinho, recording four wins out of five in Serie A (L1) and winning all three European fixtures by an aggregate of 10-2.

Travelling remains an issue for the Giallorossi, however. Beaten 3-2 at Hellas Verona in their most recent away outing, Roma have now won only one of their past nine on the road in the league, losing no fewer than six. They don’t often misfire, though, finding the net in all but two of those games having done so at last twice the past three such matches. With Lazio a reliable source for goals here in Roma, don’t expect clean sheets.
