Preview: An intriguing encounter awaits at the Stade Pierre Mauroy where the past two Ligue 1 champions, Lille and Paris Saint-Germain, renew their rivalry. It was the latter who emerged victorious across both league meetings last season, however, with PSG running up a 5-1 scoreline upon visiting this ground in February of this year.

Lille – New manager, bright beginnings?

The defence of their Ligue 1 title may not have gone according to plan last season, however Lille have made an encouraging start on this occasion and should prove the first acid test for Christophe Galtier in the PSG hot seat. There’s also a new man in the Lille dugout. Paulo Fonseca replaced Jocelyn Gourvennec in the summer and the former has taken four points across the first two matchdays.

Having opened with a convincing 4-1 victory at home against newly-promoted Auxerre, Les Douges would then share the spoils away in Nantes where they were the better team and unfortunate to have scored only the once (xG: NAN 1.59 – 2.19 LIL). After seeing out the previous term with a win and a draw also, Lille are now unbeaten in four league outings. Losing just four of 17 (W7 D6) since February.

Key Stat: Lille would only manage a solitary clean sheet in their past 10 Ligue 1 matches, with eight of these – including all of the most recent five – seeing them score and concede.

PSG – Disharmony threatening to undermine Galtier reign?

Tension is in the air and it isn’t because the Ligue 1 holders head to Stade Pierre Mauroy for the first time since dethroning the 2020-21 champions, Lille. Last season PSG were 15 points better than the rest of the French top-flight – and that was without playing their best football a lot of the time. Finishing a staggering 31 points clear of the previous year’s winners, many expect that gulf to be readily apparent on Sunday.

While that may yet be the case, the growing discontent between star forwards Neymar and Mbappe continues to drive a wedge between the team, with cliques apparently forming. Christophe Galtier – who guided Lille to the title in 2021 – is certainly earning his money in the capital. He has also enjoyed a fine start as PSG boss, thrashing Clermont and Montpellier in the league and clinching the Super Cup.

Key Stat: PSG have scored 14 goals across three competitive matches this season (4.66 per game). They are also unbeaten in 11 Ligue 1 games (W8 D3), winning all of the last four whilst scoring at least four in each.

Lille Vs PSG Betting Advice

PSG gained revenge for failing to defeat Lille in the latter’s hugely successful 2020-21 campaign (D1 L1) by beating the then-champions home and away last season, including a 5-1 hammering at Stade Pierre Mauroy. PSG, having scored four or more in each of their past four Ligue 1 games, and at least twice in 10 of the previous 11, are evidently capable of a repeat performance and result on Sunday.

Lille Vs Paris Saint-Germain – Key Facts:

  • Only one of the six previous Ligue 1 meetings between the clubs produced a winning result for Lille (1-0 in Paris in March 2021). PSG did the double last season, meanwhile, edging Lille 2-1 in Paris but spanking them 5-1 in Northern France.
  • Both teams are finding the net with regularity this season. Lille’s tally of five, however, feels modest in comparison to the nine racked up by PSG across the first two Ligue 1 rounds thus far. The former are W1-D1-L0, the latter W2-D0-L0.
  • PSG’s early success has been in part due to Neymar’s resurgence. The Brazilians has been inspired so far, involved in 60% of their goals (3 goals, 3 assists) in the wins against Clermont and Montpellier.

Nevertheless, a more competitive renewal is anticipated. That isn’t to say PSG don’t win this – because their enormously talented squad, which has hit the ground running this season, ensures that they probably do. At the very least though, I expect the hosts to go down swinging. Lille boast one of France’s most dangerous forward lines and would only fail to score in one of the last 11 league games, nine of which seen both teams score. Meanwhile, PSG are 17/10 (Betfair) to pick up three points without keeping a clean sheet.
