Middlesbrough Prediction – Can Middlesbrough gain first win?

It’s been a fairly miserable start to former player, Jonathan Woodgate’s tenure at Middlesbrough as his side have still yet to win a match in all competitions, and losing 2 of their 3 league matches in the Championship so far this season.

The curtain-raiser to the new Championship season saw Middlesbrough gain a point in a highly entertaining 3-3 draw away at Luton Town with Boro showcasing their new attacking style under their new, but vastly inexperienced boss, Woodgate, who has promised to bring the entertainment back to the Riverside Stadium.

But at what cost? And how long before Woodgate, a former defender himself, starts to employ a more cautious and conservative approach in order to try and lift Boro up the table I wonder. Something has to change and soon as the hosts head into this Tuesday night clash with Wigan Athletic attempting to avoid a fourth defeat on the trot.

1-0 losses to both Brentford (at home) and away at Blackburn Rovers have been either side of a disappointing League Cup exit to League Two outfit, Crewe Alexandra (albeit on penalties), so to say that Boro need to win this upcoming match against Wigan would be an understatement.

Wigan Athletic Prediction – Can Wigan avoid fourth defeat on trot?

An opening day 3-2 home win against Cardiff City in the Championship seemed to signal a brighter future for Wigan Athletic and manager, Paul Cook, as his side registered all three points against the newly relegated Bluebirds.

This win also extended Wigan’s unbeaten run on home turf at their DW Stadium to 11 matches and a more promising season seemed to be on the horizon for The Latics, but they’ve since slumped to 3 defeats on the trot.

Following their win over Cardiff, Wigan were on the end of a heavy 3-0 loss away at Lancashire rivals, Preston North End, which was followed by a League Cup exit at the hands of fellow Championship outfit, Stoke City, with a 1-0 defeat at the DW Stadium.

Things got worse with a 2-0 defeat at home to Leeds United on Saturday afternoon which wasn’t helped by defensive midfielder Williams being sent off halfway through the first half, an event that turned out to be a game-changer as Leeds secured a 2-0 win thereafter.

Although the visitors have held their own and avoided relegation from the Championship, the fact remains that Wigan have won just 1 of their last 22 away matches in the second tier.

Key-Facts – Middlesbrough v Wigan Athletic

  • Middlesbrough have won 3 of their last 4 home matches in the Championship
  • Wigan have won just 1 of their last 22 away matches in the second tier
  • Middlesbrough are unbeaten in their last 9 meetings against Wigan Athletic

Betting Tips Verdict

Both teams head into this clash in poor form but Middlesbrough may just edge this one.
