Preview: Tuesday’s Championship contest at The Riverside sees Chris Wilder and Steve Bruce renew managerial acquaintances. It is the former, however, who will be feeling the more bullish, with his Middlesbrough side targeting a seventh successive home league win at the expense of West Brom who are currently without a win in five.

Middlesbrough – Wilder demanding winning response?

Chris Wilder has done a tremendous job since his arrival as manager in November. Prior to Saturday’s 2-1 loss away to Bristol City, in which they were the better side having created enough opportunities (the equivalent of 1.89 xGF compared with The Robin’s 1.08) to have taken something back North with them, his Middlesbrough side had won eight of thirteen Championship matches (D3 L2) under his watch.

So there isn’t going to be panic setting in just yet, despite dropping out of the play-offs on the back of that loss at Ashton Gate. Especially being back at fortress Riverside for this midweek outing. Boro are chasing their seventh consecutive Championship home win. Conceding only twice and recording wins to nil over in-form Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest since last losing here to Preston in November.

Key Stat: There has been at least three goals scored in Middlesbrough’s past three Championship matches, one more than in their previous eight games in the competition.

West Brom – Bruce struggling to bail out Baggies?

The Baggies have undergone a change of manager even more recently than Tuesday’s opponents, who have been inspired since bringing in Chris Wilder, but are yet to reap the benefits. Steve Bruce is a wily customer at this level. His CV really does speak for itself. However, if he was unaware of the size of the task in front of him when he took the job, it was spelled out in plain sight on Saturday.

Bruce felt compelled to issue an apology to travelling supporters for an “unacceptable” performance in Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Luton. West Brom started brightly but fell apart upon falling behind. A fourth league defeat in five (D1) and a fifth on the spin away from home, having now won only once on the road since the beginning of October (W1 D2 L10). Failing to so much as score in nine of the past ten away fixtures.

Key Stat: West Brom have scored in only two of their past ten Championship fixtures (W1 D3 L6), while the recent 2-0 loss to Luton marked a fourth defeat by that scoreline in their last five league games.

Middlesbrough Vs West Brom Betting Advice

Chris Wilder and Steve Bruce will know plenty about the other having met three times recently in the Premier League while still the managers of Sheffield United and Newcastle. Bruce may have won the first two but it was Wilder who emerged victorious in last season’s only duel, and he will be supremely confident about his current side compounding what has been a truly rotten period for the Baggies.

Middlesbrough Vs West Brom – Key Facts:

  • The sides played out a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns in November as Middlesbrough avoided losing to West Brom for a sixth time in the past seven meetings (W3 D3 L1).
  • West Brom did win on their latest visit to The Riverside though, a 1-0 success in October 2019. However, the Baggies are currently on a run of five consecutive losses to nil in Championship away matches.
  • Conversely, Middlesbrough are in ominously strong form at home, winning each of their last six Championship home games with four of these being to nil.

Middlesbrough at odds against to beat a West Brom team in dire straits is simply too good to pass up.Boro boast eight wins in twelve league games having won each of their last six as hosts. Meanwhile, only two of the last six visitors to The Riverside made it to the scoresheet. This doesn’t bode well for a Baggies side without a goal for five games, desperately striving to avoid a sixth consecutive away loss to nil.
