Gary Rowett goes up against one of his former clubs on Saturday, as his Millwall side entertain Phillip Cocu’s Derby County at The Den in the EFL Championship. Rowett has made a huge impact in south London so far, with the Lions sitting just two points outside the play-off places. Can Millwall pick up a precious three points on home turf at the weekend?

Millwall Preview – Will the Lions roar to another victory?

Millwall have had a fine season in the Championship so far. Since the popular Neil Harris left The Den to take over at Cardiff City, Gary Rowett has done exceptional job, turning the Lions into genuine promotion contenders. Millwall are in eighth place with nine matches to go, two points off the top six ahead of the weekend’s fixtures.

Millwall were outstanding at the City Ground last Friday night. The London side were without doubt the underdogs against Sabri Lamouchi’s high-flying Nottingham Forest, but a first-half treble from the excellent Matt Smith gave Millwall a comfortable and deserved 3-0 away win.

The Den is a tough place to go for visiting teams, with only West Bromwich Albion winning on their patch in Championship action in 2020. However, the Lions are without a home win in five league and cup matches, with each of their last three at The Den ending in draws. Nevertheless, Millwall are the favourites to put a big three points on the board this weekend.

Derby County Preview – Can the Rams make it back-to-back away wins?

Phillip Cocu’s Derby County have one the best home records in the Championship. In fact, only third-place Fulham have picked up more home points (38) than County (37) up until now. Last weekend, goals from Chris Martin (2) and Louie Sibley earned Derby a comfortable 3-0 home win over play-off chasing Blackburn Rovers.

Away from Pride Park, though, Derby have one of the worst records in England’s second tier. Cocu has struggled to find a winning formula on the road, as Derby have suffered ten away defeats. Since winning at Huddersfield Town on the opening weekend, the Rams have picked up wins at Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday. However, that win at Hillsborough did come in their last away match.

Derby could be making a late dash for the play-offs, as last Sunday’s win over Blackburn lifted them into the top half of the table, five points adrift of sixth-place Preston North End. Can the Midlands outfit secure back-to-back away wins for the first time this season?

Millwall vs Derby County Betting Advice

Derby could be finding form at just the right time, as the Rams make the trip to The Den having won their last two in the Championship. However, Millwall are an extremely tough nut to crack under Rowett, especially at The Den.

Key Facts – Millwall vs Derby County Betting Tip

  • Millwall have drawn their last three home league matches
  • Only 14 of Derby’s 51 points have come away from home this season
  • Millwall are unbeaten against Derby in four Championship games

Millwall have a good recent record over Derby, winning the last three meetings. In contrast, Derby have won just one of the previous eight. In December, Tom Bradshaw’s goal was enough to give the Lions a narrow 1-0 victory at Pride Park.

This one could also be close on the scoreline, but I fancy in-form Millwall to pick up a crucial three points on their own patch. Have a punt on the hosts to win 2-1, which is nicely priced at 8/1.
