Napoli Preview – Partenopei back to their best under a former Rossoneri?

The hot streak continues. Since returning to action, Napoli (6th – W15 D6 L10) have continued in much the same vein as when play was halted in early March – by winning the vast majority of their matches. Wednesday’s gritty win in Genoa, seeing off a stubborn opponent with goals in either half from forward pair Dries Mertens and Hirving Lozano, made it two wins on the bounce as well as four from five following the enforced break.

So far, the only blip came in Bergamo, and there can be no disgrace in losing 2-0 away to an Atalanta side who recently clinched their ninth straight league victory. Factor in the recent capture of the Coppa Italia, after overcoming Juventus on penalties, and the impression that this Napoli team are back to something like its pomp rings true, with much of the credit for turning around their fortunes aimed at Gennaro Gattuso.

Now, though, an interesting sub-plot can develop as Gattuso pits himself against his former employer, having both played for and managed the Rossoneri. His current team certainly have the edge, however. Not since 2014 have Napoli tasted defeat in the league with AC Milan, winning six of ten subsequent meetings. While it has been even longer since their last loss in Naples, winning six of eight since a 2-0 reverse in 2010.

AC Milan Preview – This all-conquering Milan side to storm Naples?

Having won only once in five league games prior to the enforced break, AC Milan (7th – W14 D7 L10) were always likely to benefit from an opportunity to reset more than some. So it has proved, with Tuesday’s spectacular comeback victory against Juventus maintaining their excellent form since the restart which has now seen them collecte 13 of a possible 15 points and haul themselves right back into the conversation for a top-six finish.

The top seven teams all qualify for Europe next season, however, the side in seventh would be required to qualify for the Europa League rather than being dropped straight in at the group stage. So there is every incentive here for this all conquering AC Milan side to continue it’s fine form on Sunday, especially as three points in Naples would see them leapfrog their opponents up into sixth.

And if Napoli boast the upper hand in terms of recent meetings, the recent form of the two teams would marginally favour the visitors. The Rossoneri winning four of the last five, beginning with a rather routine 4-1 victory away to struggling Lecce before a trio of stunning wins over Roma (2-0), Lazio (0-3) and Juventus (4-2), coming from two goals down against the latter on Tuesday night to seal an emphatic 4-2 success in the end.

Napoli Vs AC Milan Betting Advice

Since Serie A resumed in late June, these teams have played a combined ten matches, winning four apiece. Neither come into this game low on form. The recent big-game heroics from AC Milan, beating Roma, Lazio and Juventus, is highly impressive, however, Napoli at the San Paolo, where the hosts have won their last three fixtures, is another incredibly tough proposition.

Napoli Vs AC Milan – Key Facts

  • Five of the previous six Serie A victories recorded by Napoli were despite conceding at least one goal.
  • AC Milan have netted two or more goals in three of their previous four away matches, though haven’t recorded an away clean sheet in five previous attempts.
  • After the 1-1 draw between the two sides in Milan on Matchday 14, AC Milan have now failed to register a win in Serie A over Napoli in their last ten attempts (D4 L6).

Once again goals look the best bet. Napoli have netted two or more in their last four matches but couldn’t keep a clean sheet in either, nor in any of their past three held in Naples. Meanwhile, AC Milan have netted at least twice in all five of their post-lockdown fixtures, but did concede one to Lecce along with two to both SPAL and Juventus. The Rossoneri have also gone five consecutive away games without a shutout.
