After yet another international break, Friday night football returns in the Championship with two fixtures, the most prominent being a Lancashire derby between Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers at Deepdale with a valuable three points at stake for both clubs.
Preston’s promising start to the new Championship season is in real danger of falling apart at the seams following four defeats on the trot with losses incurred against Wolves, Brentford, Aston Villa and Ipswich Town after they’d started in impressive fashion, losing just once in their first 11 matches of the season.
The home side were perhaps eyeing off a potential play-off spot in the first couple of months of this new term, but they now need all three points on Friday night to kick-start their season again, and a visit from a poor Bolton outfit could be just the remedy needed.
Onto Bolton Wanderers, and they still sit in the bottom three of the English second tier despite an encouraging sequence of matches prior to the international break which saw The Trotters put an unbeaten five match run together, which included wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City.
However, both of these much needed wins came at their Macron Stadium, while they’re still yet to register an away win in the Championship so far this season with a record of 0-4-4 5/14 on their travels to date. That said, they’ve gained points recently at Fulham and Sunderland in 1-1 and 3-3 draws respectively.
But an appalling run of 33 matches away from home without a win in the Championship makes me lean towards the hosts here, but I advise using the handicap as it’s Friday night and it’s a derby.
