Preview: Deepdale has treated Rotherham relatively well in recent times. Tuesday’s visit, therefore, is an opportunity for Paul Warne’s team to build on their encouraging early season form. They face a Preston side which has yet to master the art of scoring this season.

Preston – First win on the board but goals remain elusive?

It may have taken an early goal of the season contender but Ryan Lowe will feel his team are finally up and running in the 2022-23 EFL Championship following Saturday’s 1-0 win away to Luton Town. Brad Potts’ spectacular volley – hit with venom from a looping cross near the six-yard area – brought up Preston’s first win but also their first goal of a campaign that begun with successive goalless stalemates.

Having won their final two league encounters last season, the Lilywhites have a five-game unbeaten run (W3 D2) to protect ahead of Tuesday’s visit from Rotherham – opponents they would beat only once across six previous meetings at Deepdale. A return of four wins and one defeat in their last nine second tier home games, however, suggests they have the form in which to improve on that dismal H2H record.

Key Stat: Each of Preston’s final four home Championship fixtures of last season featured both teams scoring, while only one of these games didn’t see three or more goals. However, their only outing at Deepdale so far this term ended without a goal being scored (0-0 vs Hull City).

Rotherham – Survival aspirations emboldened by unbeaten start?

Perhaps the most least surprising takeaway from League One last season was Rotherham being promoted. The Millers have spent the last six campaigns alternating between the second and third tiers, finishing in 22nd, 23rd and 24th across their three most recent spells in the Championship. Paul Warne, closing in on six years as manager with the club, will be determined to break the cycle in the season ahead.

Two league games in and Rotherham are eighth on four points, with a game in hand on most sides. They earned their first win of the season at the weekend, a 4-0 rout of Reading at the New York Stadium, to go with their 1-1 draw at home to Swansea on the opening weekend and 2-1 win at Port Vale in the EFL Cup. Ideal form then as they set about securing a first Championship away win since March 2021 (D3 L3).

Key Stat: In League One last season, Rotherham produced the third-best figures in the league away from home (W12 D6 L5). However they managed just 27 goals from their 23 away matches, a total fewer than 13 other sides.

Preston Vs Rotherham Betting Advice

Although in recent times there has been something of an inferiority complex regarding Rotherham and the Championship, having been relegated in each of their last three seasons at this level, this wasn’t evident in their match-ups against Preston. The Millers haven’t lost any of the five previous encounters between the teams (W3 D2), winning the last three in a row with the latest a 2-1 win at Deepdale in February 2021.

Preston Vs Rotherham – Key Facts:

  • Rotherham are looking to win their fourth competitive meeting in a row against Preston, with the latter winning only one of the six prior encounters between the sides at Deepdale (D4 L1).
  • All of the seven previous matches between Preston and Rotherham has featured both teams scoring, as did the last six H2H’s at Deepdale.
  • Both teams come into this encounter still with their unbeaten records in tact for the season. Preston are W1 D2 and have played a game more than Rotherham, who are W1 D1.

In fact, Preston would win just one of the last six home meetings with Rotherham (W1 D4 L1). Ryan Lowe’s side should have a spring in their step after picking up their first three points last time out, but they weren’t wholly convincing and have only found the net once in three league outings thus far. That spells trouble ahead, against opponents that navigated the third tier conceding only 11 in 23 away games last term.
