Preview: Unbeaten in Serie A this season, AC Milan set out to retain their lead atop the table in the hostile setting of Roma‘s Stadio Olimpico. The Rossoneri will be bullish about their chances, though, having won four of the past seven encounters between the sides including a 2-1 win in Rome in February of last season.

AS Roma – Mourinho’s men still in recovery mode?

Since that chastening evening in Norway, when a largely second string Roma team was humiliated 6-1 by a Bodo/Glint outfit that was relatively unknown to the wider world beforehand, the Giallorossi has drawn with Napoli and come from behind to beat Cagliari. Even the top managers are not immune to the occasional thrashing, but the best prevent it from happening again, as Jose Mourinho can attest.

Wednesday’s nervy win in Cagliari – Roma managed 22 shots on goal but only three on target – lifted Mourinho’s side up into fourth (W6 D1 L3). Still nine points off title pace, though, currently set by Sunday’s opponents AC Milan. Recent head-to-head meetings indicate another tough evening awaits, having won one of the previous seven between the clubs. However Roma will be buoyed by their exploits in Rome thus far (W4 D1).

Key Stat: No visiting team to the Stadio Olimpico that has faced AS Roma in Serie A in 2021-22 has managed more than one goal, while each of the last three (Empoli, Napoli and Udinese) couldn’t muster a single goal between them.

AC Milan – Rossoneri unrelenting in pursuit of Scudetto?

Their best start to a Serie A season since 1954-55, when they won their fifth of 18 Italian top-flight league titles. Ranked second for both goals scored (23) and conceded (9). Is this the season the Rossoneri are at long last reunited with the Scudetto? If they are to finish top of the pile for the first time since 2011, results like those on Sunday, against hosts determined to sour the mood, can make or break any challenge.

On Wednesday, Milan recorded their ninth win in ten league outings this term (D1) with a scruffy-yet-deserved 1-0 scoreline at the San Siro versus Torino. It was, however, the third successive game in all competitions struggling to carve out chances, averaging a paltry 0.66 xG across this period. So improvements are clearly needed against a Roma side breached just twice in the Eternal City all season.

Key Stat: Juventus are the only team to have prevented AC Milan from winning on the road in Serie A this season. The Rossoneri have won four of five such fixtures, scoring at least twice in each of the past three.

Roma Vs AC Milan Betting Advice

Some semblance of pride has been restored in the Roma camp, taking four points from two Serie A outings following that chastening result in Norway. One of those was against long-time leaders Napoli, holding the Partenopei to a goalless draw at the Stadio Olimpico. Yet that brought their record versus last season’s top-six to a far from convincing D1 L2. Though their record at home, in general, remains strong (W4 D1).

Roma Vs AC Milan – Key Facts:

  • Four of the past seven Serie A meetings between the clubs were won by AC Milan, including a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Olimpico in February of last season.
  • However, after prevailing 2-1 in last season’s corresponding fixture, the Rossoneri are bidding to record successive away league victories against Roma for the first time since 2005.
  • It won’t be easy, though, as Roma are unbeaten as hosts in Serie A this term (W4 D1). As too are Milan on their travels (W4 D1), winning each of the last three such fixtures.

Roma are unbeaten in Rome under Jose Mourinho, going the last three here without even conceding. They are therefore capable of stunting AC Milan’s superb start to the campaign. However Milan are on a six-match winning streak in league play, drawing only with Juventus on the road (W4). Worryingly, they’ve not been creating as many chances lately. That should change now that Zlatan is back spearheading the attack.
