Salernitana – New manager but same issues?

All is not well in Salerno. The club have been embroiled in off-pitch controversy for most of the season which clearly hasn’t aided performances on the pitch. Last week’s 1-1 draw away to fellow relegation scrappers Genoa essentially doing more harm than good, leaving the team cut adrift at the foot of Serie A and looking for a third manager of the season.

As head coach, Stefano Colantuono paid the ultimate price for the latest failure, a fourth successive winless outing having won only one of fourteen (W1 D3 L1) since late October. Former Crotone boss Davide Nicola has been installed, presumably for the rest of the campaign. His first port of call, however, will be improving upon a dismal return of one point from the last seven home matches at Stadio Arechi.

Key Stat: Salernitana have only scored seven times in 11 Serie A home games this season, failing to score at all in seven said fixtures. In six home games versus last season’s top seven, they have scored zero goals but allowed 16.

AC Milan – Rossoneri should consolidate top spot?

The Rossoneri stood to gain the most from Napoli and Inter Milan drawing in Naples, but only if they could follow it up with a win of their own. A superb solo goal from Rafael Leao helped settle any early nerves inside San Siro against Sampdoria. The defence took care of the rest, Milan prevailing 1-0 and holding out quite comfortably in the end to register a fifth league win in seven (D1 L1) and climb up to first place.

Milan did an excellent job in limiting La Samp, who were coming off an impressive 4-0 victory over Sassuolo, to a mere 0.23xG. Their reward was a third clean sheet in five. Away from home they haven’t been beaten since the middle of November, picking up four wins and a draw since losing a seven goal thriller in Florence. This includes wins in each of the last three at Empoli (2-4), Venezia (0-3) and Inter (1-2).

Key Stat: Milan have found the back of the net on at least two occasions in nine of their past ten Serie A away matches (W8 D1 L1).

Salernitana Vs AC Milan Betting Advice

Having only recently reclaimed top spot, the last thing Milan will want to do is hand it straight back. Fortunately for Stefano Pioli and his players, they have been handed the perfect fixture this weekend. Opponents Salernitana already looked doomed, now nine points from safety after failing to win last week’s Serie A basement battle in Genoa. I suspect that gap will widen by the time Milan have departed Salerno.

Salernitana Vs AC Milan – Key Facts:

  • Back to back draws with Spezia and Genoa means Salernitana host an AC Milan side boasting five wins in seven in the midst of their longest unbeaten run of the season.
  • However, as hosts Salernitana have suffered six defeats in seven with all but one of these losses seeing the home side fail to trouble the scoring.
  • This does not bode well ahead of a meeting with Serie A leaders Milan. The Rossoneri boast three clean sheets in five Serie A outings having also won the meeting at San Siro between the sides 2-0 earlier in the season.

At the San Siro in December, Salernitana created a measly 0.27xG as they were easily dispatched 2-0 by AC Milan. There is little reason to believe the reverse encounter won’t follow a similar pattern. The hosts have lost six of the last seven here at Stadio Arechi, where they are yet to manage a goal against a top team despite facing all of Atalanta, Inter, Juventus, Lazio, Napoli and Roma – losing to each of them to nil.
