SPAL Preview – Writing on the wall after a winless resumption?

It seems merely a matter of when, rather than if, SPAL (20th – W5 D4 L23) are relegated. The club have spent the last two seasons in Serie A, barely surviving their first full term in 2017/18 before a more respectable finish of 13th second time around in 2018/19, but are destined to return to Serie B after producing an underwhelming league campaign so far which has seen them register fewer points than any other side.

Four points from their last two league games immediately prior to the league’s suspension in March had given the club and its supporters the lift they needed, hinting perhaps at a great escape coming to fruition. Since returning to action, however, coach Luigi Di Biagio has overseen five defeats in six, picking up a solitary point from the last eighteen available to leave the club eleven points adrift of safety in last place.

The latest setback was arguably the most damaging, though, falling to a 2-0 loss away to a Genoa side occupying the nearest position of safety in 17th. Any lingering hope of staying up has probably faded with that result at Stadio Luigi Ferraris. It was also the third straight game without troubling the scoring, suggesting this team hasn’t recovered from squandering a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at home with AC Milan a fortnight ago.

Inter Milan Preview – Nerazzurri to continue achieving success the hard way?

It wouldn’t be Inter Milan (2nd – W19 D8 L4) if it were straightforward. On Monday evening the Nerazzurri featured in their seventh league game since Serie A returned during the middle of June, with those games averaging four goals per game while only one failed to produce both teams among the goals. They would eventually prevail inside the San Siro, but only once conceding the opening goal for the fourth occasion since the resumption.

Inspired by a seemingly reborn Alexis Sanchez, whose creativity was at the forefront of the 18-time Italian champions mounting a comeback, Inter stormed back with a far more accomplished second-half performance as they scored three unanswered goals to beat Torino 3-1. But it was another lacklustre start from Antonio Conte’s men, who have now found themselves behind on at least one instance in five of their last seven games.

Despite a habit for making life difficult for themselves, Inter have still garnered enough points since the restart (14 from a possible 21; W4 D2 L1) to move up into second, level on points with a free-falling Lazio but still eight adrift of the defending champions and current pacesetters, Juventus. The latter face two tricky upcoming fixtures though; a win for Inter at rock-bottom SPAL, therefore, could apply some useful pressure.

SPAL Vs Inter Milan Betting Advice

Antonio Conte’s side returned to winning ways earlier in the week, eventually seeing off Torino to win 3-1 at San Siro, but it was another instance of Inter Milan falling behind and making hard work of what should have been a simple assignment. Rock-bottom SPAL, who have lost three consecutive games all without scoring, is another, but can the Nerazzurri be trusted? Indeed, it is one win from their last four away matches (W1 D1 L2).

SPAL Vs Inter Milan – Key Facts

  • Now 11 points adrift of safety, SPAL must start winning games but haven’t managed to do so in any of their last six Serie A fixtures since a 1-0 win at Parma on 8 March.
  • Trailing leaders Juventus by 8 points, Inter Milan also know they need to win this fixture but have mustered one win from four previous away league games (W1 D1 L2).
  • Since their Serie A promotion for the 2017-18 term, SPAL remain winless across five meetings with Inter Milan, losing four, with three of those clashes producing both teams scoring.

Inter are certainly volatile, however, they’ve now netted more goals (68 in 32 matches) in 2019-20 than all bar free-scoring Atalanta. They’ve netted two or more in six of seven games since the restart meanwhile, scoring one and missing a penalty in the other. It is the defending which often leaves a lot to be desired. Therefore SPAL, despite their obvious shortcomings this season, are capable of contributing and have actually failed to score in just six of fifteen home outings thus far.
