Preview: A first top-half Serie A finish in three seasons beckons for Torino. That is provided they can claim a positive result, similar to the 3-1 scoreline which saw them emerge victorious from last season’s corresponding encounter, against a Roma side at risk of missing out on European qualification through the league.

Torino – Hosts motivated to finish in Serie A top-half?

There was a distinctly end-of-season feel to last week’s contest in Verona as Josip Brekalo’s early strike, off the underside of the bar, settled a game of few chances in Torino’s favour at the Mercantonio Bentegodi. It marked a third win in five for a side beaten only once since the start of April (W4 D3 L1). Torino will now aim to make it back-to-back victories for the fourth time this season, last doing so back in January.

One final victory ensures they can finish no lower than tenth, but they will snatch ninth from under the nose of Hellas Verona should the latter come unstuck away to Lazio. The omens are positive. ‘Il Toro’ were unbeaten in three successive home outings prior to a narrow 1-0 loss to Napoli last time out at Olimpico Grande Torino, a ground the likes of AC Milan, Fiorentina, Inter and Lazio have all come unstuck in 2021/22.

Key Stat: Only five of 18 teams to have visited Torino in Serie A this season scored more than one goal, with some of the more notable sides restricted to under 1.5 teams goals being AC Milan (0 goals scored), Fiorentina (0), Inter (1), Juventus (1), and Lazio (1).

Roma – Dip in form could lead to dire consequences?

Having been clear favourites for a top-six finish as recently as April, Roma begin the final round knowing they can finish as high as fifth – thus qualifying for next season’s Europa League group stage – but as low as eighth, which would mean missing out on continental competition altogether. However, should their worst nightmare become reality, there is at least a contingency plan in place.

The club’s upcoming final for the Europa Conference League provides them with an additional safety net should things unravel over the weekend. And unravel they could. Roma haven’t won a league game since coming from behind to score twice late on against Salernitana on 10 April, collecting three of a possible 15 points thereafter (D3 L2) having been held 1-1 at home in the latest by already-relegated Venezia.

Key Stat: Roma’s current five-game winless run in Serie A is their longest without winning of 2021/22, scoring just three times since a 2-1 home win against relegation-threatened Salernitana on 10 April.

Torino Vs Roma Betting Advice

I’m pleasantly surprised we can get odds in excess of even money about there being fewer than three match goals. Although Torino did let their guard down in recent clashes with Spezia (2-1h), Atalanta (4-4a and Empoli (1-3a), those were the only instances when Over 2.5 Goals produced a winner across their past 11 Serie A games. Il Toro are also very adept at shutting up shop when the big boys come to Turin.

Torino Vs Roma – Key Facts:

  • Roma have won three of the last four Serie A meetings between the sides but not last season’s clash in Turin, which Torino won 3-1 after overcoming a 1-0 half-time deficit to score three unanswered second-half goals.
  • There is a contrast between the sides when it comes to recent form. Torino have lost one league game in 8 (W4 D3) whereas Roma are without a win for five Serie A outings (D3 L2).
  • Torino haven’t conceded more than once across all of their four previous home matches. Meanwhile, Roma didn’t manage more than one goal in any of their last six away games in Serie A.

AC Milan, Fiorentina, Inter Milan, Juventis and Lazio all netted no more than once away to Torino in the league this term. Meanwhile, Roma, who have one eye on their upcoming European final, are enduring a torrid bout of form having scored three times in failing to win any of their last five Serie A contests. Torino or Draw/Under 2.5 Goals appeals, then, but my lack of recent winners means I will play safe about Unders.
