It is a must win situation for the British pair who have won one and lost one of their pool matches. It all started brightly for the British women when they came from a set down to beat Canada at the Horse Guards Parade. That win has kept them in with a whiff of a chance of making it through to the knock-out stage, but they need a performance against the strong Russian. Great Britain lost their second match in straight sets against group leaders Italy. A victory over Russia would send Great Britain through to the knock-out stage for certain. From the six pool groups, the top two plus the two best third placed teams from the four groups will progress. So it is not done and dusted for the British women yet.
However, they will face the Russians who also lost against the Italians and beat the Canadians. Russia were able to take a set off the Italians though, so while they are level on points with Great Britain, they have a slight advantage. But this match, with Italy being expected to beat Canada, will be a straight shoot out for a place in the next round. Expect some excitement and a big British support at the Horse Guards Parade as Dampney and Mullin go for broke, even though they are heavy underdogs.
