Alaves Preview – Mendizorrotza never an easy venue to visit?
Despite a defeat in their first La Liga match since the league was suspended in March, Alaves (15th – W8 D8 L12) remain in a strong position to extend their stay in Spain’s top division. With a seven point cushion over those currently residing in the relegation zone, the club can feel reasonably confident about avoiding the drop so long as more results like the one suffered last weekend at Espanyol can be avoided.
To lose against the bottom side can only be viewed in a negative light, especially as victory would have been another significant step towards securing safety. Ultimately, it was a deserved defeat. And while there were mitigating circumstances, mainly losing their goalkeeper early on for handling the ball outside his area, that they carved out just 0.09 in xG was a little alarming if not entirely unsurprising.
Throughout the season so far, Alaves have consistently been among the weakest attacks, scoring just 29 times in 28 games. A significant portion (18) of those goals, however, were scored at their Mendizorrotza stadium where only three of fourteen visiting sides – Real Madrid, Sevilla and Villarreal – have gotten the better of them in 2019/20. So they have every right to believe they can bounce back here.

With the teams below them all failing to win during the first round of La Liga matches staged since early-March, it is only natural that Real Sociedad (4th – W14 D5 L9) should feel a golden opportunity was missed on Sunday as they were held at home by Osasuna. The 1-1 scoreline far from disastrous, though, and it could turn out to be a valuable point after fighting back from 1-0 down to claim a share of the spoils.
Moreover, watching the team immediately above them, Sevilla, come unstuck less than 24 hours later would have perked up any member of the dressing room who may have been feeling downbeat with the Osasuna outcome. That should only increase the incentive for winning in Alaves, whom they comfortably beat 3-0 at home on Matchday 6 after racing into a three goal lead before half-time was even up.
If beating their upcoming opponents once already this season wasn’t enough to inspire confidence in Imanol Alguacil’s side, La Real winning whilst not conceding on each of their past two visits to Alaves should just about do it. On a slightly more subdued note, one win from their last four away league encounters – losing at Leganes, Real Betis and Barcelona in this sequence whilst beating only Eibar – might well temper some enthusiasm from punters.
