France’s Alize Cornet came up with an excellent win in her opening match on Wednesday at the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy event. She knocked out Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets. Cornet will now meet the hard-hitting Maria Sakkari for a place in the quarter-finals.

Cornet delivers impressive win in Russia
Alize Cornet was up against Jelena Ostapenko in the opening round in St Petersburg. The French player came storming out of the gates, immediately unravelling the game of her opponent and soared to a 6-1 6-2 success.
Cornet had to come through the qualifiers to get to the main draw here. But she was on point with her service game and Ostapenko, who does look to be lacking confident at the moment, had no answers.
Cornet, ranked 61st in the world currently, didn’t make it past the second round of her Australian Open campaign, losing to Donna Vekic. She had entered two tournaments this year before the action at Melbourne Park and won two matches at the ASB Classic and then one at Hobart.
So that leaves her with a W5 L3 match record this season. This is no easy game on the cards here against Sakkari though, who leads the head to head.

Maria Sakkari opened her account in Russia with a battling win over qualifier Vitalia Diatchenko. It was expected to be a little easier for the Greek player than that, but she won the deciding set on a tie break.
Sakkari survived and that is all that matters and that is one of the great aspects of the 24-year-old’s game. She battles. She hits hard and digs deep. Her 2020 didn’t get off to a hot start, winning just one of her first three matches, but she came good at the Australian Open.

Sakkaari made a great run to the round of sixteen at the Australian Open. She had won the first set there against seventh seed Petra Kvitova, but couldn’t hold out. In the round of 32, she had taken a notable win against 10th seed Madison Keys.
Sakkari has won 74% of her service games this season and is capable of firing down those troubling aces. Sakkari is going to have to be a little bit better defensively than she was in her opening match, to get to the quarters.
However, she has won both previous meetings with Cornet. They were both back in 2017 at the Australian Open and then at Wuhan.
