Andy Murray takes his first steps in Grand Slam action since the 2019 Australian Open.

Murray has taken part in just two of the last ten Grand Slam events, so this is a big occasion for him.

In this opener at the 2020 US Open, he takes on World Number 48, Yoshihito Nishioka.

Andy Murray Preview – Murray to make progress in New York

The three-time Grand Slam champion, and 2012 US Open winner Andy Murray, had a good burst of action at the Western & Southern last week.

That was hosted at Flushing Meadows and Murray made the third round where he was knocked out by Milos Raonic.

But he had taken out World Number 7 Alexander Zverev in the second round.

That is the only tennis that Andy Murray has played this year.

Murray is a long 4/11 odds-on favourite for this fixture* (odds taken 23:35 GMT Monday, 31st August).

This will be the first meeting between Andy Murray and Yoshihito Nishioka.

Murray took his two match wins at the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati last week in three-sets.

A Murray 3-1 correct score is at 11/4 odds for Tuesday’s fixture, which makes for a little bit of value* (odds taken 23:35 GMT Monday, 31st August).

Andy Murray has not been past the quarter finals in any of his last five US Open campaigns, but he has never been knocked out in the first round in his career at Flushing Meadows.

Yoshihito Nishioka Preview – Can Nishioka pull off a surprise win?

What kind of threat is Yoshihito Nishioka to Andy Murray in the first round of action at Flushing Meadows?

The 24-year-old has not had a bad year so far, which started with a W2 L1 record at the ATP Cup in Australia in January.

He did reach the third round of the Australian Open 2020 where he was stopped by Novak Djokovic in straight sets.

Nishioka had faced British opposition at the Grand Slam, beating Dan Evans in three-sets in the second round there.

The highlight of his year came where he reached the final of Delray Beach in February, an ATP 250 event.

Yoshihito Nishioka last had a competitive match in Dubai at the end of March.

That surely has to put him at a slight disadvantage here against Murray, who has playing time on the courts in New York.

There is also a lack of experience at Grand Slams from him, having made his debut in 2014.

The Japanese player’s best ever effort at a Grand Slam happened at the 2020 Australian Open when he reached the third round.

Last year he made it to the second round of the US Open for the second time in five efforts.

Andy Murray vs Yoshihito Nishioka Betting Advice

In the early stages of the Western & Southern Open last week, Murray actually looked to be moving fairly well.

Over a best-of-five sets match, you would expect Murray to have the strengths to pull through this contest.

But it’s not beyond the realms of probability that his opponent can get a set on the board.

Key Facts – Andy Murray vs Yoshihito Nishioka Betting Tip

  • Andy Murray will meet Nishioka for the first time
  • Andy Murray played at Western & Southern Open last week
  • Yoshihito Nishioka has not played since February

So a Murray 3-1 correct score is going to have plenty of appeal for us at 11/4* (odds taken 23:35 GMT Monday, 31st August).

We don’t see him slipping up in this fixture, not on the evidence of some relatively strong play early last week.

For a little more interest a Murray -5.5 Game Handicap is at even money* (odds taken 23:35 GMT Monday, 31st August).
