Arsenal find themselves in the slightly surprising position of having one foot already in the quarter-finals of the Europa League following last week’s 2-0 win away at Italian side, AC Milan, in the first leg of this round of 16 clash.
Even the most ardent of Arsenal fans wouldn’t have fancied The Gunners’ chances of claiming a win in Milan last week, let alone achieve a two-goal cushion ahead of this second leg at The Emirates following a drab display against Brighton in the Premier League, which became their fourth defeat on the trot in all competitions.
However, fortunes can change very quickly in the space of a week, not only from bad to worse but also from bad to fairly positive, as Arsenal will now look forward to this second leg where they should put the tie to bed. A 3-0 home win over Watford on the weekend was the perfect tonic for the previously ailing Gunners.
AC Milan will be wondering quite just how they find themselves chasing down a two-goal deficit in this second leg after what was a solid run of results under manager, Gattuso, as his side had previously captured six wins on the trot in all competitions, and indeed, were unbeaten in their 13 matches prior to Arsenal’s visit last week.
AC Milan also recorded a bounce-back win on the weekend when they grabbed all three points in a 1-0 win away at Genoa, which helped lift them up into sixth place in Serie A and the second of two Europa League places, but it’s this season’s competition which will concern them the most tonight.
The defeat to Arsenal was only their second loss in 22 matches overall in this competition, but dare I say, they’ve only been up against ‘second tier’ sides away from home to date in recent times, and this will test them here.
