Preview: London derbies have treated Arsenal well this season, securing half of their four Premier League victories against fellow London sides. That statistic is one of a select few positives to be had for the hosts coming into Boxing Day, seeking to extend their 12-game unbeaten record on this day when Chelsea visit Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal – Under-fire Arteta beginning to feel the heat?

Talk of a return to the Arsenal (W4 D2 L8) fold for the ostracised Mesut Ozil has intensified on the back of the club’s poorest ever start to a Premier League season. Some have even gone as far as to suggest the manager should leave, and it hasn’t exactly been a small minority putting forth this particular case either. After witnessing Mikel Arteta’s midweek meltdown, perhaps it would make perfect sense for all parties.

Arteta certainly came out swinging in the aftermath of last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Everton which extended the north London club’s winless run in the league to seven matches (D2 L5). If only the players had shown the same gusto as their manager in their Carabao Cup last-eight tie with Man City on Tuesday. The Gunners were resoundingly beaten, losing the battle of the second strings 4-1 here at the Emirates.

The club has only ever endured a longer barren run in the league than they do now once before, when going eight without a win between 1992-93. These are undoubtedly dark times then, and, worryingly, Arteta doesn’t appear to have solutions to the fact that not only are his team struggling to win games, they’re not scoring either – netting just four and earning one win across their last ten Premier League fixtures.

Chelsea – Improving Blues to build on recent triumph?

Frank Lampard saw his Chelsea (W7 D4 L3) team put back-to-back away defeats against Everton and Wolves firmly behind them when beating a surprisingly limp West Ham at Stamford Bridge last Monday. The 3-0 scoreline flattered them slightly, with neither side especially pleasing on the eye, while the contest itself hung in the balance until a quick-fire brace from Tammy Abraham settled matters ten minutes from the end.

That win wasn’t enough to lift the Blues back into the top-four, though, trailing in the wake of fourth placed Everton by a point. Leaders Liverpool are sixth points better off, meanwhile. So there remains plenty more work to be done. Fortunately, it is out-of-sorts Arsenal up next. Unfortunately, they are back on the road, seeking to avoid losing a third consecutive Premier League away game for the first time since February 2019.

Encouragingly, Chelsea possess a formidable record on Boxing Day. Last season’s 2-0 loss at home to Southampton halting their 14-game unbeaten run, comprising of nine victories, when playing immediately after Christmas. Moreover, their past 17 Premier League meetings with the Gunners have garnered just two losses (W9 D6 L2), coming from 1-0 down to earn a 2-1 win at Emirates Stadium in 2019/20.

Arsenal Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

Leading 1-0 with 83 minutes on the clock, Arsenal contrived to lose this same fixture 2-1 last season, despite Pierre Emerick Aubameyang putting them in front early on. The Gabon international has netted in his two previous Boxing Day fixtures since arriving in England, while the Gunners are unbeaten in their last 12 top-flight matches held on this day. That is about as positive as we can be about their chances, however.

Arsenal Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • Sat 15th in the Premier League, Arsenal have only ever endured a longer wait for a league win than they do now (7; D2 L5) between 1992-93 (8).
  • Having lost both of their past two away Premier League games against Everton and Wolves, Chelsea are striving to avoid a third successive away league defeat.
  • Chelsea secured their first away Premier League victory over Arsenal since 2015 (D1 L2) when coming from behind to earn a 2-1 win in this fixture last season.

Arsenal are winless in seven Premier League games and have scored four times in the last ten matches in the competition. Nobody knows where their next goal is coming from, let alone win. Chelsea, meanwhile, arrive in North London having lost their previous two away fixtures but are blessed with an embarrassment of attacking riches and a defence nowhere near as suspect. Backing the visitors at even money is a no brainer.
