Arsenal Preview – Gunners to go all guns blazing in search of three points?

Next season is now likely to be this club’s first without European football in quite some time. Sunday’s 2-1 defeat in the North London Derby, losing to fierce local rivals Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite a thunderbolt from Alexandre Lacazette putting them ahead early on, has left the Gunners four points adrift of seventh-placed Sheffield United who occupy the closest Europa League berth.

It was another bright display from Arsenal (9th – W12 D14 L9), dominating for large periods and always looking to get on the front foot to attack, who are gradually improving with every game under Mikel Arteta even if the results are sometimes not the most desirable. More defensive errors cost them on Sunday as has been the norm this season, and that has to be of huge concern ahead of hosting the Premier League champions.

Arsenal have generally fared a lot better from a defensive aspect at their Emirates Stadium, however. The Gunners are currently seven home league games without defeat, winning five, in a run comprising only four goals conceded and as many clean sheets. Yet their record when hosting the traditional ‘top six’ is mixed: struggling to some degree versus Chelsea (1-2), Man City (0-3) and Tottenham (2-2) whilst beating only Man Utd (2-0).

Liverpool Preview – Klopp struggling to guard against post-champion complacency?

Just as well the Premier League is wrapped up nice and early, because the form of Liverpool (1st – W30 D3 L2) since returning to competitive action last month has been dubious. It hasn’t been the disaster some fans would have us believe – they’ve only lost one of six games (W3 D2 L1) since the restart, which was away to an in-form and rampant Man City – but it has been noticeable how their levels have dropped. In particular, away from home.

Prior to beating Brighton 3-1 at The Amex in their latest away fixture, Liverpool had claimed one point from nine on their travels away to Watford (3-0), Everton (0-0) and Man City (4-0) – failing to muster a single goal across all three outings. Even at Brighton there were enough nervy moments to suggest their issues haven’t exactly disappeared, despite racking up a deceptively cosy scoreline.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Burnley was another case in point of the standards easing up, especially as on this occasion it was at Anfield where they had previously won all sixteen league games before goalkeeper Nick Pope’s heroics denied them another small piece of history. Salah, in particular, was very wasteful. The Egyptian had netted two the game before and is still in the running for a third successive Golden Boot, trailing Jamie Vardy by four.

Arsenal Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

You get the impression this is not going to be dull – and it rarely is between these two sides. Over 3.5 Goals has landed in 12 of the last 14 league and cup meetings. Meanwhile, their head-to-head encounters so far this season have absolutely been no exception: a 3-1 victory for Liverpool at Anfield in the league was followed not long after by an astonishing 5-5 draw at the same ground in the League Cup in October.

Arsenal vs Liverpool – Key Facts

  • Seven home Premier League games without losing for Arsenal (W5 D2), since a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on 29 December.
  • One win in four away Premier League games (W1 D1 L2) for Liverpool, who can still boast by far and away the best away figures in the top-flight this season (W13 D2 L2).
  • Goals are a recurring theme with these two, with 12 of the previous 14 league and cup meetings delivering four or more goals – including both encounters this season (one in league and the other in League Cup).

Liverpool have kept one clean sheet in their previous four away league games, conceding three at Watford, four at Man City and one against Brighton. It is conceivable, therefore, that Arsenal will have some joy against what is still the best defence in the Premier League in 2019-20. Nevertheless, Liverpool at close to even money seems extremely generous. The Reds have picked up at least ten more away points than anyone else and are still a class above this mid-table Arsenal side.
