The Premier League action returns this weekend after the international break and Saturday lunchtime brings us the north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham at the Emirates Stadium with not only bragging rights at stake but also only one point separates the hosts who sit top of the league and their visitors who occupy 3rd place, with both teams heading into this clash on the back of impressive wins last time out.

Arsenal Preview – Can Gunners claim derby spoils?

Arsenal bounced back from their recent 3-1 loss away from home at Old Trafford against Manchester United in impressive fashion as The Gunners registered a comprehensive 3-0 win against Brentford just before the international break, and the hosts will be keen to pick up where they left off in Saturday’s lunchtime clash against rivals, Tottenham.

Arsenal were quickly out of the blocks at the start of this season’s Premier League campaign as Mikel Arteta’s side collected five wins on the trot with victories over Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Bournemouth, Fulham and Aston Villa respectively, and although they were handed defeat by United, the win against Brentford has nevertheless maintained Arsenal’s position at the summit of the division.

The bigger picture shows Arsenal have also won 11 of their last 14 matches overall in the English top flight which is an impressive record, while the three defeats that they have suffered during this period were all away from home; Tottenham 3-0, Newcastle United 2-0 and the aforementioned result against Manchester United 3-1.

Switch to results on home soil though and Arsenal’s record looks even more promising as The Gunners have lost just three of their previous 21 games which consists of no fewer than 16 league wins and includes a 3-1 victory over Tottenham back in September of last year along with winning their last six home games on the trot.

In addition, Arsenal have won the last two home meetings on the trot against Tottenham but Arteta will be without Mohamed Elneny with a hamstring injury, Emile Smith Rowe (groin surgery) and Cedric Soares who took a knock, while Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Thomas Partey are all hoping to return to the squad.

Tottenham Preview – Can Spurs extend unbeaten start?

Tottenham may not have been keen for the international break as the north London visitors further extended their impressive unbeaten start to this season’s Premier League campaign with a 6-2 thumping of strugglers, Leicester City, just before the break which became Tottenham’s fifth win in their opening seven games of this new term.

3rd placed Tottenham have now claimed wins against Southampton, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Leicester City along with picking up useful points in draws with London rivals, Chelsea and West Ham, although it should be noted that four out of Tottenham’s five league wins to date have been achieved on home soil at their Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Nevertheless, the bigger picture looks a stable one for Spurs who have suffered just the one defeat out of their last 18 matches overall in the domestic top flight, that being a 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton back in April of last season, and the last meeting between themselves and Arsenal saw Antonio Conte’s side record a comprehensive 3-0 home win over The Gunners.

Tottenham have also put together an eight-match unbeaten run away from home as well, which consists of four wins and four draws, with victories collected on the road at Brighton, Aston Villa, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest but their last visit to the Emirates Stadium resulted in a comprehensive 3-1 loss to Saturday’s opponents, Arsenal.

Antonio Conte is sweating on the fitness of their number one goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, who has a thigh injury and Fraser Forster is standing by but Dejan Kulusevski has returned from international duty with a hamstring injury. Ben Davies and Lucas Moura are hoping to be fit and return to the squad for Saturday’s clash.

Key Facts – Arsenal v Tottenham Tip

  • Arsenal have lost just 3 of their previous 21 home games in the EPL
  • Tottenham have put together an 8-match unbeaten run away from home
  • Arsenal have won the last 2 home meetings on the trot v Tottenham

North London derbies are tough to predict, especially following the international break but Arsenal have produced impressive form on home soil in recent times, wining their last six home games on the trot so The Gunners should at least avoid defeat here, if not claim a narrow win to maintain their position at the top of the Premier League.
