Preview: Last season saw the bragging rights in North London equally shared, with both home sides on the day prevailing. This bodes well for an Arsenal side looking for their third successive victory in the Premier League, facing off against a Tottenham team striving to avoid losing for the third league game in a row.

Arsenal – Gunners building up useful momentum?

It wasn’t that long ago Mikel Arteta shortened dramatically in the next manager to leave betting, such was the underwhelming nature of their start to the campaign under the Spaniard. However, since losing all of their first three league games by an aggregate of 0-9, the Gunners have come to the defence of their manager by winning each of the next three competitive fixtures without so much as conceding a goal.

Subsequently, Arsenal approach the first North London derby of 2021-22 as the in-form side, following up back-to-back 1-0 victories over Norwich City and Burnley in the league with a comfortable 3-0 scoreline at home to AFC Wimbledon in the EFL Cup. They play Leeds in the fourth round of that competition, scheduled for late October, and can climb into the top half of the Premier League with three points on Sunday.

Arsenal did win this fixture 2-1 last season, last managing successive wins against Tottenham in 2014. Meanwhile, two goals in five league games is level with bottom side Norwich. For this reason, Arteta could do worse than handing Alexandre Lacazette a first Premier League start in more than five months. The Frenchman scored in each of his three previous home North London derbies, inspiring two victories.

Tottenham – Kane back scoring but Spurs still not winning?

Since ending August top of the Premier League with three wins from three, beating all of Man City, Wolves and Watford by the same 1-0 scoreline, Tottenham haven’t managed a win in 90 minutes in four subsequent games (D2 L2) spanning three competitions. Nuno Espirito Santo will hope to put that right in Sunday’s North London derby, in what will be his first taste of this fixture as Spurs manager.

On Wednesday, Tottenham threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 away to Wolves in the EFL Cup. The same scoreline they produced six days earlier in Europe. Meanwhile in the league it is back-to-back 3-0 defeats, with both coming in local derbies. Spurs were well beaten away at Crystal Palace prior to a promising first-half display giving way to a pitiful second-half showing last weekend at home to Chelsea.

In their history, Spurs has never lost by three or more goals in three consecutive league fixtures. They’ve also only won once in the last 28 away league games against Arsenal (D11 L16), losing six of ten subsequent meetings since coming from behind to win 3-2 in 2010. Harry Kane scored his first of the season in midweek, though, and is the all-time leading goalscorer in North London derbies with 11 goals.

Arsenal Vs Tottenham Betting Advice

Momentum in football can regularly swing from one extreme to the other and these teams are a perfect example. At the end of August, Arsenal occupied last place while Tottenham sat perched atop the league table. Two games later and a nine-point gap between the fierce rivals has been whittled down to just three, with Arsenal winning their past league games to nil as Spurs lost theirs without scoring.

Arsenal Vs Tottenham – Key Facts:

  • Just one of the last 12 North London derbies in the Premier League were won by the away side, with Arsenal unbeaten in ten as hosts (W6 D4).
  • Those hoping for an entertaining contest laden with goals could be disappointed. Both teams scoring has occurred in 0 of 8 competitive Arsenal matches this season and just 2 of 9 for Spurs.
  • Arsenal will feel the more confident, however. The Gunners are chasing a third straight league win at the same time Spurs are looking to avoid a third successive defeat in the competition.

Arsenal’s recent wins have been against modest opposition, edging out Norwich and Burnley. They’re still not scoring enough, which is a shared problem as between them they haven’t managed more than one goal across ten combined Premier League games so far this season. This fixture tends to throw up goals, with each of the last seven league meetings seeing at least two. This could be a rare exception, however.
