World Number 1 Barty looking the real deal
Heading into her home Grand Slam tournament as not only the world’s number one, but the outright favourite for the title, heaped so much pressure on Ashleigh Barty. Looking at her on court, you wouldn’t know it.
She was up against the in-form Petra Kvitova in the quarter finals and the first set of that contest went to a tie-break. In that battle of nerves for supremacy it was Barty who just held it together to take the tie break 8-6.
That put her on the front foot and she powered to an easy success in the second set. It has been just two dropped sets that Barty has suffered in this tournament. One in the first round and then against Alison Riske in the fourth.
She has looked dialled in. Now Barty is only two wins away from becoming the first Australian to win the Australian Open since Chirs O’Neil did it in 1978. Given the form that she has produced, it’s going to take a bold punt to oppose her.
Barty and Kenin have met five times before. The head to head lead is with Barty at 4-1. The most recent meeting between them happened last year in Wuhan, the Australian taking the win in straight sets.
Kenin’s lone win in the head to head happened in Toronto last year over three sets. The only previous meeting at a Slam was at Roland Garros 2019 with Barty needing three sets to get through.
Can Kenin cause an upset?
This has been a huge breakthrough for youngster Sofia Kenin. Her previous best efforts at a Slam were three round of 32 exits at the US Open. Impressively Kenin has only given up the one set in this long campaign and she still looks as fresh as a daisy.
The 22-year-old was up against the unseeded Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals. After a tight tussle in the first set, it was Kenin who had the extra in her legs and in focus the longer the match wore on. The American took it 6-4 6-4.

In the fourth round, Kenin had had the crowd against her, because of a huge bias towards Cori Gauff in their matchup. Kenin handled herself so well to power through and again it was superior fitness and concentration over the latter part of the match that got her there.
